I love exploring New York City with my daughters, but a day with our eyes wide open as we take in the sights and sounds of the city can really build up our appetites. I love about the city is that there are so many diverse food options from around the world BUT there are rarely any healthy fast food options. I try to bring food wherever I go but snacking and eating on-the-go is inevitable and now parent in the NYC-area have an incredible options for both healthy and organic food at the restaurant Chelsea's Table. Located at Pier 92 in Chelsea Piers, Chelsea's Table is a natural fast food restaurant that is aiming to change the way families eat by incorporating organic and local food into a quick and easy model. I love this model for NYC and it is particularly important for parents who are changing the way their families eat but aren't always able to find the best and most affordable choices while on-the-go.
During a recent school holiday, I took my two daughters to the city for a day of adventure and after a trip to the High Line we made our way to Chelsea's Table and meet with Executive Chef David Seigal. Dave took us through the food line and explained the menu, the various food stations and the sourcing of the ingredients. I loved looking at all of the fresh and organic items such as Applegate meats, local greens, their signature homemade bread made with honey, fresh fruit, baked goods and more as Dave explained that all ingredients are organic or from local farms.
A vision of Gary Hirshberg, Chairman of Stonyfield, Chelsea's Table embodies his commitment to "real food" where I saw a delicious menu filled with pizza, soup, salads, pasta, sandwiches, smoothies, burgers, juices, muffins, yogurts, and more. For lunch, I had the amazing Roasted Beet salad while my daughters had the hummus with carrots and celery and the chicken fingers. Although my salad was relevantly simple, I was really impressed by the variety of ingredients that were included such as chickpea, tomato, feta, roasted red peppers as well as the delicious lemon vinaigrette that accompanied it. My baby loved the hummus and freely dipped her bread in the chickpea goodness while my older daughter and big chicken finger fan was loving their organic version that came from Pelleh Farms.
What I really loved was that nothing is fried in the restaurant so you can rest assured that you are giving your children the best possible food choices that are also sourced from local farms as well as those that adhere to organic food practices. Some other tasty options for kids include Macaroni & Cheese, Grilled Cheese Flatbread, Applegate Organic Hot Dogs and fresh made pastas such as Fusilli Satur Farms with arugula & basil pesto and Penne fresh tomato with chicken and local mozzarella.
To finish off our meal we all enjoyed pineapple frozen yogurt that was topped with granola, strawberries and chocolate chips! In the summer, guests can even walk-up (or bike/skate up) and order a ready-to-make smoothie with organic Greek, Stonyfield yogurt, or milk! It was a dream lunch for all of and I loved that my girls ate a wholesome and delicious meal that was also focused on sustainability, health and nutrition.
After this delicious lunch we continued our adventure energized and I couldn't be happier to finally have a fast-food option that I felt excited about feeding my children.
