Friday Food: Got Milk?



In a few weeks I'll be on hand to interview the next celebrity mom that will be the face of Got Milk? And right now, I'm working with the Milk Mustache team at BlogHer. So it's a perfect time to talk about milk recipes. This week I posted about my own at home smoothies. Since it's Back to School month, we're sharing two more breakfast recipes from Got Milk--both perfect to power up your kids before school.

Strawberry Breakfast Sunrise Smoothie
Ingredients (Makes 1 serving, 8 ounces of milk per serving)
1 cup fat free or lowfat milk
1/2 cup fresh strawberries
4 ounces lowfat plain yogurt

Directions: Combine all ingredients in blender, and blend until very smooth.

Nutrition: 180 calories; 2 g fat; 1 g saturated fat; 10 mg cholesterol; 14 g protein; 26 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 210 mg sodium; 720 mg calcium (70% of daily value); 100 IU vitamin D (25% of daily value). Nutrition figures based on using fat free milk.


Banana Breakfast Shake (Makes 2 servings, 6 ounces of milk per serving)

1 1/2 cups fat free or lowfat milk
1 peeled and sliced medium banana, frozen
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
1/4 teaspoon almond extract, optional
Cinnamon for garnish, optional

Directions: In a blender container combine all ingredients, except cinnamon. Blend until smooth, about 20 seconds. Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, if desired.

Nutrition: 120 calories; 0 g fat; 0 g saturated fat; 0 mg cholesterol; 7 g protein; 23 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 100 mg sodium; 190 mg calcium (20% of daily value).
