Looking for ways to trim the holiday food budget? We've got tips from the marvelous Stephanie Nelson aka the Coupon Mom. In this Momtrends Exclusive interview, we've learned how this master couponer saves thousands of dollars a year by shopping smart (and head here for a bit of coupon shopping 101 advice)
How much can a mom expect to save using coupons?
In one calendar year, a family of four can save over $6000 on their grocery shopping using the Coupon Mom Strategic Shopping system
Where are the best places to hunt for coupons for holiday entertaining?
The most food coupons will be in the Sunday newspaper circulars, 80% of grocery coupons come from the Sunday coupon inserts. However, you can also find good coupons at the printable coupon sites like CouponMom.com and the grocery store websites (Editor's note: for an example visit the Stop&Shop; page here to see examples of a store's online savings). Flip through magazines to find special coupon inserts for holiday meals and recipes as well.
Should I use a coupon to test out a new brand?
If the new brand is on sale, the coupon could make it practically free. In that case, it may be fun to try a new brand at virtually no cost. But it doesn't make sense to pay a premium price for a new brand just because you have a coupon.
What are some of your money saving tips for entertaining?
The best way to save on entertaining is to plan, plan, plan. Select favorite recipes that use store sale items, or watch for the ingredients for your favorite dishes to go on sale in the weeks prior to your event and stock up then. Make traditional dishes, since those are the ingredients that supermarkets mark down to rock-bottom prices during the holidays, such as sweet potatoes, turkey, green beans and pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving. Say yes when friends and relatives offer to bring a side dish or dessert!
