I’m happy to say that my son is excited to go to nursery school. He was in a “two’s program” last year (see the ridiculously cute graduation pic, above!), and is really looking forward to joining the big kids in the “three’s.” New teacher, new friends, new toys, new curriculum… Did I mention NEW TOYS?!?!?! He’s pumped—and so am I. Really, my mini man thrives on routine, and we’ve been seriously lacking that this loooooong summer vacation. And, so, the return of school will the return of a more predictable schedule. It’s a win for all!
The G-Man may be mentally ready, but I have a bunch of preparations to do before that thrilling first day. We’ve done our clothes shopping (because someone grew quite a bit this summer!), but I still need to get some supplies, a new age-appropriate backpack, some school-approved snacks… Oh, and I have to make an adorable Instagram-ready First Day of “Three’s” chalkboard sign…. (Because, if I don’t share the moment on social media, did it really happen?)

So, don’t worry nursery-school-Mama newbies, we’ve got you covered with some tips, tricks, eats, treats, and healthy-habit cheats. Today, we're talking about simplifying morning time and meal time.
We’ve eaten our fair share of hot dogs and ice cream this summer. We’ve skipped naps and gone to sleep way passed our bedtime. I’ve even let my little guy skip brushing his teeth (once or twice) in the name of absolute exhaustion! With the start of the school year, we’re ready to adopt some new healthy habits. We'll be taking our vitamins daily, brushing our teeth twice a day, drinking more water (less juice!), and walking to school--or, better yet, taking our bike for a ride!
Since we’ll be back on a routine soon and striving to stay happy and balanced, I’ve decided that now is the ideal time to start my whole family on vitamins. My son wakes up super early, but that doesn’t mean the morning rush isn’t still, well, a rush! He likes to take his time—play, eat a leisurely breakfast, watch some Mickey… Suffice to say, it can be a process. So, breakfast isn’t always all that "leisurely"—and it's rarely homemade. Luckily, I’ve found a few edible solutions that are healthy and easy.
One of his favorite “fast” breakfasts is a peanut-butter-and-strawberry Jammy Sammy from Plum Organics with a sippy-cup of milk and a piece of fruit. Individually wrapped, a Jammy Sammy is a pocket-friendly bar that's great on the go—because, on any given day, chances are we’re running late! Nevertheless, I can still feel good knowing my little learner is getting whole grains, protein, vitamins, and minerals before the school day even begins.
My guy eats lunch at home, but gets to have a small snack at school. I try to keep it healthy—organic apple slices, a bowl of berries, string cheese, etc. These Annie's Cheddar Bunnies have a permanent place in our snack-time rotation, because they're always a hit. Made with 100% real cheese, organic wheat, and absolutely no artificial flavors or synthetic colors, they’re absolutely addictive. Seriously—I’ve been guilty of polishing off a box (or two) at home! As I previously mentioned, we eat lunch at home (but how cute does he look sitting at a big-kid cafeteria table?). As soon as we get back from school, it’s time for his mid-day meal. I want to get him fed and fast—because he’s tired, and nap time can’t come soon enough!
My guy is a good eater. When it comes to lunch, he’ll chow down on pasta, chicken nuggets, hotdogs, sandwiches… you know, the usual toddler fare. Fortunately, he’s also a big veggie-lover—so broccoli and peas and carrots and spinach are a regular part of his daily diet. He also loves having a fruit pouch with lunch. The Fruit-and-Veggie Mash-up pouches from Plum are made from organic fruits and veggies (bonus!), and mixed and mashed into deliciously squeezable purees. They’re naturally sweet, but have the added benefits of colorful veggies.
