We're excited to share yet another new monthly feature at The Shopping Mama. We call it "In the Bag" and every month we'll be taking a look inside the diaper bag, purse, or tote of one of our favorite mamas. It's kind of like snooping - only with permission - so it's totally okay. But, we can't be the only ones curious about what bag other women chose to carry, and how they use it day to day.
First up? Moi. So read on to see what I carry in my bag day to day.
My current bag is.... the Petunia Pickle Bottom Downtown Tote. I shared lots of details about why I am digging this bag in the Downtown Tote review, but I think the amount of crap I can fit into it gives you a pretty good idea!
What's in my bag? The "amazing things will happen" spiral notebook I created using this design from The TomKat Studio is the perfect size for jotting notes, making grocery lists and the kids can doodle in it when if they need something to keep occupied. My Erin Condren Life Planner (sequins cover design) either resides on my desk or in my bag. It is on the big side, but it is loaded with the what, when and where's on my life. At the moment, I'm knee deep in making preparations for Max to start Japanese preschool. It is a process, to put it mildly, so the envelope of paperwork from his school is a current constant companion.
I am always losing or sitting on or scratching sunglasses so I don't spend a lot on them. LOFT is one of my favorite places to grab a pair because they're always on sale - my current Round Tortoiseshell Sunglasses (similar) were 50% off. Score.
How to Celebrate Adoptive Parents
I recently learned that a friend who had been patiently awaiting a child became a parent practically overnight. When I heard about this loving couple bringing home their first baby, it really got me thinking about how to celebrate adoptive parents. We have experience with ...read more
Spiked Apple Cider Pops
September in the South is, in my opinion, still summer. The eighties and nineties always prevail and make the traditional fall flavors that I crave so much slightly out of reach. As much as I want to relax and sip on some hot cider, at the moment, I still need something iced. ...read more
Japan Adventure Park Hyatt Hotel Niseko
Are you ready for an international ski adventure with your family? This new opened in January 2020, right before the big shutdown. The Park Hyatt hotel is located 2 hours northeast of the New Chitose airport in the northern island of Hokkaido. We arrived via flight from Tokyo to ...read more
I can't live without.... lip gloss. I don't always have three varieties of lip gloss / chap stick / lip stick in my bag like I do today, but there is always at least one. My favorites tend to rotate between my makeup bag to my tote.
Burt's Bees Lip Shine in Blush is a super affordable, trusty lip gloss. It adds lots of moisture and just the right amount of color. My newest lip obsession is Dior Addict Lip Glow in Pink and it is magic. Literally. It is sheer but "enhances your natural lip color" - truly, I can see the difference - and adds lots of moisture and comfort. . I've been using Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Katherine (c/o) since a Buxom party in NYC last summer. It's a great top coat to add some shine over lip stick or a little touch of color on a bare lip.
The winter weather is particularly dry here in Japan, so in addition to lip stuff I also have lotion stashed everywhere - my bathroom, the car, kitchen and of course my bag. I picked up this cute little Lush Dream Cream as part of a gift set at the holidays. It's the perfect size to fit in a pocket of my tote. The blue thing next to my lip glosses is an atomizer (like this one) filled with water and a few drops of lavender essential oil to give me a little peace when running out and about.
Max is currently (finally?) potty training so I am back to carrying a stash of toddler clothes around, in addition to the diaper change essentials. The Downtown Tote includes a wipes container and changing pad and those will remain in the bag until we are (finally!) out of diapers.
Grab and go.... my Stella & Dot Madison Tech Wallet. This is the item I most often grab from my bag. It's perfect for running a quick errand and even has a slot for my phone. It's also convenient for me because it has two places I can keep money so I can separate yen from dollars.
Come back next month for a sneak peek in another mom's bag.
