Fall is on the horizon here in NYC. While summer doesn’t technically end for another week (and we’re still rockin’ our matching warm-weather romps!), it’s become clear from the crispness in the early morning air and pumpkin-spice lattés at our corner Starbucks that autumn is quickly approaching. Oh, and school is back in session—what with hectic drop-offs, endless homework, and extra extra-curriculars busying up our already jam-packed schedules. (I’ll take another Venti PSL, extra espresso, puh-lease!)
With the transition of seasons, comes a necessary change in routine. The lazy days of summer are ending, and it’s time to get our acts back together, get organized, and set some goals for our kids, our families, and, of equal importance, ourselves. Yes, it’s time for me to stop neglecting my own needs—beyond caffeine. And I’ve decided this starts with a new and improved skincare regimen.
I admit it—I got lazy in August. I didn’t apply sunscreen every day (tsk tsk), and I wasn’t really using an arsenal of products, besides my daily cleanser and moisturizer. That bronzed summer glow can be deceiving though—and now that it’s starting to fade, my complexion was looking less than stellar.
Adding fuel to my fire, I just learned I live in the eighth most wrinkle-prone city in America. As a busy metropolitan area, New York City is an extreme urban environment with congested commuting and lower air quality (sounds like fodder for the Big Apple’s next marketing campaign, no?). In other words: there are some major external factors that could be contributing to my skin’s current sitchie.

To obtain these statistics, iconic French skincare brand, RoC, teamed up with independent research firm Sperling’s Best Places to create the 2016 RoC Wrinkle Ranking. It takes a city-by-by look at skin-damaging risk factors—like smoking, congestion, and high heat. As if peeking in the mirror and looking at my tired face wasn’t motivation enough…
And that’s why I was so excited to test out two new Retinol products from RoC. In case you’re not familiar, retinol, is the “it” ingredient and “gold standard” in anti-aging skincare, reducing the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles while working with the skin’s natural renewal system to improve overall tone and firmness. And because retinol is only truly effective in its most stable form, all RoC products containing retinol are packaged in special aluminum tubes that protect it from light and air. Pretty neat, no? (If only it was that easy to protect ourselves from the harsh air of NYC!)
I first added RoC Retinol Complexion Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer With SPF 30 into my daily morning routine. I always wear a light moisturizer under any makeup (on the days I can manage to put some on!), and I like that this one has built-in UVA and UVB protection—that means one less product for this busy mama to keep on her vanity. You do have to be careful about sun exposure when using retinol products, and I feel confident that this moisturizer has me covered for everyday errands, school pick-up, and other activities involving limited sun exposure. Better yet, RoC’s exclusive formula has been clinically proven to diminish deep wrinkles after eight weeks of use and prevent premature aging. I’ve been using it for three weeks now, and my skin already looks refreshed, revived, and more supple. (I can’t wait to see what a few more weeks of use will do for my complexion!) (Buy at CVS.)
Next, I decided to try the RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream. I’m 34 and I have two late-to-bed, early-to-rise kiddos. I’m perpetually sleep-deprived, overwhelmed, and under pressure—so my eye area can use all the help it can get. And, yet, I’ve been very reticent when it comes to using eye creams. Because the surrounding skin is so über sensitive and irritable and I’ve had some unfavorable reactions to a few super-rich formulas, I tend to err on the side of caution and leave well enough alone. But when I learned that RoC makes a sensitive eye-cream formula, I was ready to give it a go. (Buy at CVS.)
With an exclusive blend of pure retinol and an essential mineral complex, this amazing hypoallergenic, non-greasy(!) product starts to work immediately to smooth the delicate skin around the eyes. It reduces dark circles (of which I have many), crow’s feet, and puffiness. Within one week, I saw a definitive difference—my eye area seemed less swollen, less shadowed, and more awake!
After early success with a few of RoC’s retinol product, I’m a convert and I’ll definitely give a few more items in the line-up a try—RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream, RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum, and RoC Daily Resurfacing Disks are next on my list.
Bring on the fall in NYC—Mama’s ready for a new routine, a renewed outlook, and a fresher face.
