Here’s the terrifying truth: One in three women die from heart disease or stroke. It’s a scary fact and a staggering statistic. But most importantly, it’s a wake-up call.
As moms, we tend to put ourselves last. We’re so busy taking care of the little (and big!) people around us, we can lose track of our own needs and even neglect our health and well-being.
With a toddler and a newborn at home, I’m definitely guilty of this. My kids’ wants come before my needs. I’ll skip the treadmill during nap time in favor of a little crash session in front of the television or I’ll eat a doughnut from the drive-through coffee shop, instead of a real meal, to save a few precious minutes. I’ve even put off important doctor’s appointments, because “I just can’t find the time.” It’s irresponsible and inexcusable—because, what my kids need most of all is a healthy mom.
Today is National Wear Red Day. For the twelfth year in a row, the American Heart Association is encouraging women to dress in the confidence-boosting color as a visual reminder to take control of their lives. It’s a call to action for all of us—to start an exercise regimen, to change our diet habits, or to schedule that long overdue doctor’s appointment. Because, the reassuring reality is that, in most cases, heart disease can be prevented.
To kick off Heart Health Month and celebrate all the women in my life, I’ve curated a few fabulous finds that are perfect for National Wear Red Day—and all throughout February! Let’s spread the word and wear our hearts (and our red!) on our sleeves.
