Why am I committing to run the 2011 NYC Marathon? Not because I have oodles of free time. Not because I long to see all 5 boroughs of NYC in one day. But because I am blessed with abundance and try to give back where I can. When the fine leaders at Baby Buggy offered me a slot in this year's marathon I took up the cause.
With any luck, my training will pay off and on November 6th I'll be running 26.2 miles to raise funds and awareness for this great cause. Founded in 2001 by Jessica Seinfeld, Baby Buggy® works with an extensive network of community based organizations to distribute a wide range of new and gently used essentials including cribs, strollers, clothing, diapers and bottles. Since its inception, more than 4.8 million items, all of which are vetted for safety and utility, have been donated to families in need.
These items include: 2.3 million Diapers 6200 Cribs, 5100 Strollers, 3200 Front Carriers, 2200 Bath Tubs 2200 Highchairs, 2100 Baby Monitors and 1800 Playpens.
I'm lucky that my girls have never truly needed any material items we could not provide. I partner with Baby Buggy because they are able to get goods into the hands of the neediest and most deserving moms through a network of distribution sites includes: hospitals, domestic violence and homeless shelters, prenatal and early education programs, court child centers, Safe Horizon, Harlem Children'??s Zone and the Nurse-Family Partnership program.
Operating on a budget of approximately $5Million, Baby Buggy'??s receives financial supporters from a diverse group corporations and individuals to make the mission happen. I'm putting my feet to work to support this worthy cause.
On average, Baby Buggy serves 890 families and 1,480 children each month. I'd like to see these numbers grow, so I'm doing my part. Support Baby Buggy by pledging to sponsor my run here.
