The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers has always been a great place at Pier 60 along the Hudson River Park to get your workout on - with machines, an indoor track, cycling classes, personal trainers and more. The Sports Center has now added a serene single space studio known as the Mind Body Studio, featuring 35 new classes this summer.
Sports Center members and non-members can come along to the Studio for classes such as Barre, Yoga and Meditation. Sports Center members will be offered an enhanced membership option that provides unlimited access to the Mind Body Studio classes.
I had the pleasure of trying the very first ever Nalini Method course at the Studio - which is a jam packed hour of cardio, Pilates and Barre work, strength and resistance training all rolled into one intense, fun and sweat inducing workout!
Nalini Method founder and instructor Rupa Mehta welcomed each student to the class that has been taught for years in the Upper West Side. With an uncanny trait for remembering names, she shouted out encouragement and postural adjustments to individual class goers while we felt the energy of a dance mix playlist.
The studio itself features bamboo flooring which is gentle on your knees for high impact workouts. The lounge area is a small but relaxing space to wait for class to begin and fill up your bottle with free filtered water. A nice touch is the electronic day lockers - no need to remember to bring a lock!
The Mind Body Studio opened to the public on June 29th and you can find out about all the classes on offer as well as book a class online at www.chelseapiers.com/sc.
Post Workout Pampering at Paul Labrecque Salon
Once you've worked your body out, you can also visit the Paul Labrecque Salon & Spa to pamper your weary muscles. From traditional spa treatments such as massages and waxing, they also offer award winning hair, skin and nail services.
Because their stylists train under Paul Labrecque himself, you can expect a high quality of service for individual makeup consultations, bridal packages and even men's barber services.
Chelsea Piers Sports Center members receive a 10% discount on services and so making an appointment for a massage after a fitness class seems like a no-brainer. After balancing on my toes, working my abs and strengthening my arms in the Nalini Method class, a massage was just what I needed.
The Sports Center is setup so that you can easily take a shower in between workout and massage, slipping into a Paul Labrecque robe and being offered tea in the Spa waiting room. I was put in Tony's capable hands where he quickly established that I carried my stress in my shoulders and had tight calves and quads! He was correct on all points - hours at the computer and clocking up miles running without not enough stretching makes for a wound up Ghada! He used a combination of deep tissue, swedish and even stretched me out on the table. Let's just say 4 days later I still feel very limber.
If you are looking for a one-stop shop in the Metropolitan New York area with innovative fitness classes and options to join a more traditional gym with a high class Salon & Spa, you might just find this all in the new Mind Body Studio at the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers.
