Some childhood memories feel almost tangible. I can remember the touch, smell, sound, and sight of my mom rubbing Vicks VapoRub on my chest as a kid. It’s a nostalgic type-of reflection that I think back to every time I have a stuffy nose or nagging cough. A mother’s touch—it offers the ultimate soothing relief, as does Vicks VapoRub, of course.
To this day, when I’m sick with a cough, I apply a thick coat of Vicks to my throat and chest, lay a warm dry cloth over it, and breathe in deeply. A call to my mom, requesting some of her famous chicken noodle soup (and her equally acclaimed babysitting services), and I almost immediately feel calmer; I’m on the road to recovery.
It’s no surprise that Vicks VapoRub is the number-one selling children’s cough medicine product on the market. With camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol, VaboRub provides me with instant relief –-so that I can actually get the much-needed sleep my body needs. My kids know no mercy, and want me up and at ’em and playing at the crack of dawn regardless of how I feel, so getting those zzz’s, at night, even when I’m sick, is absolutely essential. And, yes, Vicks VapoRub is great for big kids like me, and equally effective for children ages two and up.
Naturally, when my loved ones are huffing and puffing and hacking, too, I try to channel my own mom (minus the homemade soup), and get out the VapoRub, knowing that the vapors will last up to 8 hours, safely and effectively giving them cough-quieting relief. With a permanent home in my medicine cabinet, it’s a brand I trust and an iconic product I’ll always use.
And so when Vicks VapoRub invited me and my four-year-old son to an 8-hour play date this past weekend, I didn’t hesitate to accept. We joined Vicks, SheKnows, NYC bloggers, and local parents at Recess in DUMBO, Brooklyn, for a fun and educational morning and afternoon of snacking, learning, and playing.
While munching on healthy breakfast treats (including green juice—to boost the immune system!), a registered nurse gave us tips, tricks, and facts for combating colds and coughs. I learned that Vicks VapoRub can also be used topically for minor muscle aches and pains—I had no idea! My other favorite FYI: make sure you and your kids are actually washing your hands—and not just giving them a quick rinse with soap. Sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” all the way through whilst rubbing soap into you’re palms to ensure they’re sufficiently clean.
After posing in the VapoRub photo booth, my energetic mini man and I spent a couple of very active hours jumping and climbing and bouncing and racing and pedaling and playing in the indoor structures at Recess. Before leaving, we washed our hands (“up above the world so high”) and headed out the door with a new Vicks cool-mist humidifier and a jar of VapoRub in tow... Eight hours of play, eight hours of relief, and lots of long-lasting memories made.
