I knew about Carole King and her solo career, but what was remarkable was the learning about the background of her life as a Brooklyn teenage songwriter who along with her husband wrote hits for some of the biggest songs in rock 'n' roll. Through the musical we see how they wrote songs like 'Some Kind of Wonderful,' 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling,' 'Take Good Care of My Baby' and much more as these songs tell the story of her life and eventual solo career.
Played remarkably by Tony Award-nominee Jessie Mueller as 'Carole King (whose voice sounds incredibly like King's) along with Jake Epstein as Gerry Goffin and Anika Larsen as Cynthia Weil and Jarrod Spector as Barry Mann as her fellow writers and best friends, the musical brilliantly shows her early career as well as how she was able to find her voice through changes in her personal life.
It was fascinating to learn more about this Brooklyn girl and see all of the songs that she wrote that was depicted through a rendition of the bands that performed them in the 60s and 70s. I also loved seeing her evolution and how she broke out on her own as a young mom of two - leading to acclaimed musical success through a life she never she wanted.
