Did you catch the Green Home Special on HGTV last night? If you did you already know about the giveaway to win a home in Plymouth Mass, a car and cash totaling $800,000. In addition to a unbelievable prize. HGTV is also doing a great job focusing on green design.
For the past few years HGTV has designed a home incorporating green technology to help spread the word that design can be gorgeous, attainable and eco-friendly. But, let me get my one concern out of the way. The Terrain is by no means a "green car" it averages 22 mpg and is not a hybrid. I think HGTV and GMC are pushing the limits here, but I guess they've got to market cars somehow.
Now back to what they did well. The sinlge-family 2 BR, 2.5 bath house was designed with efficient water management (it even collects rain water to use). Plus, all the appliances are energy star and the home utilizes a solar heating system. To tour the house go online here.
The site is so much fun to play with. You can gaze at the gorgeous rooms and see detailed breakdowns of the appliances. I'm loving this laundry room (it would inspire me to stay on top of our dirties that's for sure). The room uses MacKenzie Brothers custom'??crafted birch plywood cabinetry faced with earth-friendly MDF paneling for the laundry and mud room. An eco-friendly CaesarStone countertop in a smoky ash shade and industrial-style bronze pendant lights complete the look. And I swoon for the cherry red LG Energystar appliances.
I caught up with Sabrina Soto on the phone last week to talk about green design and the HGTV special. We chatted about green design and she told me, "there is so much available now, it's really exciting." Sabrina says that we can fill our homes with design that is pleasing to the eye an the environment. Her greenest tip? "Shop thrift stores, there has never been a better time to hit your local Goodwill" says Sabrina. Go green by recovering an old sofa or chair with new fabric.
