I love a good romance… Better yet, I adore a love story set in a long-ago era. A drama with friction, heartbreak, triumphs, and tribulations is my weakness! But, best of all: An awesome romantic drama set in a historical period... All of the above! (What more could I ask for from a television series?)
And that’s why I’m so excited about the season two premiere of Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart. This juicy, moving, and historical show has become a guilty (or, rather, not-so-guilty!) pleasure of mine. I recently binge-watched a few episodes, and, I have to say, I’m sold. I can't wait to start watching every week for a regular WCTH fix! (BTW, those of us who are fans happily call ourselves "#Hearties!")
Inspired by Janette Oke’s book series about the Canadian West, When Calls the Heart is a drama about Elizabeth, a young high-society teacher assigned to work in the small town of Coal Valley. She must adjust to life in a place that's been rocked by a coal mine explosion, which killed nearly half the town’s men. Abigail Stanton (played by Lori Loughlin) is one of the women mourning the loss of her husband. In fact, despite their suffering, many of Coal Valley's widowed women are forced to work in the mines themselves. They have to support their families, while demanding justice for their husbands. Meanwhile, Elizabeth has a hard time winning over Constable Jack Thorton, who resents the fact that he has been assigned to protect her.
With an impressive cast that includes Erin Krakow, Daniel Lissing, Jack Wagner (as in Melrose Place’s Jack Wagner), and Full House’s Lori Loughlin, this show has quickly become a favorite. BTW, I also love watching for the costumes! (Who doesn't love a good period-inspired ensemble?)
If you need to find me this Saturday night, I’ll be home in front of my television watching the drama (and the romance!) unfold. Mark your calendar: The two-hour season premiere of When Calls the Heart is on April 25 at 8/7c. I plan on putting the kids to bed early and curling up on the couch for 120 blissful minutes of me-time. All I need is a glass of wine and a quality catch-up session with Elizabeth, Jack, and the rest of the Coal Valley crew. I can hardly wait!
