Amazon Summer Reading Challenge & Ideas to Inspire Kids to Read

As far as we're concerned, summer is all about having fun and making them most of the freedom that comes with no school schedule. Of course, we worry about avoiding the "summer slide" - or kids losing valuable skills learned during the school year - and we're fighting back by encouraging reading all summer long. And lots of it.

Summer Reading Photo Contest

To encourage summer reading, Amazon has launched a fun photo contest aimed at capturing kids' love of reading. Entering is easy - simply upload a photo of your little ones enjoying a book at https://kindlesummerreading.com.

Three winners will be selected by Amazon judges. The Grand Prize winner will receive a fantastic prize package for the whole family, including Kindle Paperwhite, Fire HD 7 tablet, Fire HD Kids Edition tablet, two Kindle Voyages, Fire TV, Fire Phone, three Kindle covers, one Fire tablet cover, one pair of kids’ headphones, and a $200 Amazon Gift Card. Two First Prize winners will each receive a $150 Amazon Gift Card.

Summer Reading Fun

The best way to encourage summer reading is to make it fun through creative reading spaces, systems to acknowledge and reward progress and, of course, good books.

Create a fun, new place to read. Build an outdoor reading fort, rename your inside play fort the "summer reading hut" or just sit in a big ol' box to read.

Use a reward system. Here are a few of our favorite free downloads to encourage and reward kids for reading. Remember to create challenges beyond quantity (number of minutes, books, etc) and encourage kids to read in new places or try new kinds of materials. Summer Reading Chart from Sweet Rose Studio is simple and to the point.
