It's no surprise that I love multi-function baby gear. I don't have enough closet space or a deep enough wallet to buy baby gear that will only last for a few months. Gear companies have been meeting the challenge with strollers that convert from singles to doubles and activity seats that are suitable for babies up through toddlers. And diaper bags are following suit too. The silhouettes are more modern, storage layouts more adjustable, and baby-only features like diaper pads or wet bags are removable. Here are two of our favorite new diaper bags that are guaranteed to last you well beyond baby.
While I have three boys, I'm beyond the baby years now, joyfully leaving the house sans diapers, wipes or back-up onesies. While these two bags are designed as diaper bags, I've been testing them to see how they perform beyond baby - running errands, out for a night with my husband, and on vacation. Here are two of my favorites finds.
Petunia Downtown Tote
First up is this swoon-worthy Downtown Tote from Petunia Pickle Bottom. The tote comes in two sizes (see the difference here) - regular and a smaller mini size that I was testing - and three fabric options - jacquard, embossed, or my favorite, glazed coated canvas.
Great for baby....This tote is a simple and chic option as a diaper bag. It comes with a variety of internal pockets, a roomy main interior, a zippered exterior pocket and a removable, water-resistant and washable baby changing pad and wipes case. The glazed coated canvas exterior makes it easy to clean and is perfect for parks and playgrounds. I love the smooth exterior and that everything is stored inside, keeping things clean and contained. If you're a Type A organizer, this bag may not have enough pockets for you, but if you're a grab-and-go kind of mom, you'll love the simplicity of this tote.
After baby... I've been carrying this bag for the last month and have loved how, with the wipes case and changing pad removed, the bag has worked perfectly as a purse. I took it with me on a recent weekend in Palm Springs at the Two Bunch Palms resort. The bag moved with me seamlessly from yoga class to the soaking pools, from wine tasting to the spa. And as the name suggests, the Downtown Tote worked just as well for a night out in downtown Palm Springs. While there are six different glazed fabrics to choose from, I love this black and white Secrets of Salvador print highlighted with vegan leather trim which seems to work just as well with yoga pants in the morning as it does with heels at night.

Newlie Louise Backpack
One of my other favorite bags comes from Newlie, the brand new diaper bag collection from Leslie Newton, founder of timi + leslie. There are three different styles to choose from - the Lily Tote, Gail Satchel, and Louise Backpack.
Great for baby...Moms will love the space, style and carry options of the Louise backpack diaper bag. You can carry it with the handles, with the cross body strap, or wear it as a backpack. The bag comes with a removable changing pad, two interior bottle pockets, and a unique insulated interior pocket for keeping bottles or toddler snacks chilled. You can also order additional accessories sold on the Newlie website including a bottle tote, wet bag, a clutch for mom, and stroller straps.
After baby...While this bag functions well as a diaper bag, nothing about the exterior of this bag even suggests that you might have diapers inside. For a day of errands, I love that the Louise gave me quick access to my phone and keys with an exterior pocket and was even deep enough to hold my laptop for a day of writing at my local coffee shop. Unlikely a traditional exterior bottle pocket that can make a bag look bulky when not in use, the Louise has two zippered side pockets that can be unzipped for storing a water bottle or other essentials, but can also be zipped closed to keep the bag silhouette sleek. And who are we kidding, the insulated pocket is great for adults too! I've used it to keep my own snacks cool and even threw an ice pack in once to keep my homemade energy bars from melting.
