Vanessa Francis of Decor Happy

decor happy bedroom after

Vanessa Francis's blog, décor happy, has been one of my inspirations ever since I spotted her daughter's gorgeous bedroom re-do. Her bedroom started out looking very pretty, but Vanessa transformed it into a fabulous room. It looks like she used an expensive decorator, but she did all herself.

Granted, Vanessa is designer, (check out her amazing portfolio here) but the materials she used for her daughter's room are attainable to us non-designers and that's one of the reasons I'm so smitten. Vanessa said she started with the headboard fabric and let the colors (pink, red and coral) influence the rest of the room. The fabric was ideal because it didn't have any white, which would get dirty. Her goal was to create a fun, colorful room with plenty of storage.

She had her daughter's rocking chair from her nursery recovered and the rocker changed to legs. Vanessa didn't want to part with it since it was so comfortable. (Gee, I wish I would have thought of that. I just sold my daughter's rocker on Craig's list!)

Another favorite of mine is the feminine vanity table/desk next to the bed. I love how it looks glam and not "shabby chic." I think it was brilliant to hang a contemporary mirror above the dresser instead of something too fussy.

As gorgeous as the headboard is, my favorite part of the room are these chic bookshelves. Get ready for this. They are actually two LIATORP bookcases from IKEA. She painted the insides a deep coral (Martha Stewart Terra Rose) to coordinate with the headboard. Love. This. So. Much.

Vanessa created a DIY linen bulletin board by placing linen over batting and stapling to the back of an inexpensive bulletin board. The hot pink velvet ribbon coordinates with the headboard.

The boxes and baskets on the bookcase are mostly from Ikea, West Elm and thrift store finds and the donuts artwork, by Avril Loreti, is, actually, a tea towel!

Vanessa replaced the hardware (from Anthropologie) on her daughter's dresser to give it new life. The painting on the left was done by her daughter and I like it more than the professional one!

I know I'll be looking at this lovely bedroom many more times for inspiration. Vanessa Francis managed to incorporate the perfect mix of sophisticated, fun and practical in her daughter's room. Check out her blog, decor happy, for many more "ideas + inspiration to live well in your home".
