To learn more about the website, we chatted with Gretchen Hansen, co-founder and CEO as we learned more about how the site came about and how we can all easily add some design elements into our homes.
Momtrends: How did the idea for decorist come about?
Gretchen Hansen: I always loved designing my home but thought it would be even better to gain access to "bite sized" advice – personalized to me in my style and budget - from someone with great taste. When I was redoing my living room for the fourth time and couldn't quite finish it, I really wanted someone to help me pull it all together. I didn't need to hire a designer to redo the entire room, just help me finish it and that is how the idea for Decorist was born.
We wanted to create a place where any woman can go to get design advice, big or small. Much effort goes into understanding each person’s individual style so we can really help them with their home.
Momtrends: How can someone who isn't a novice in design use your site?
Get Out and Play with a Smarter Set of Wheels
Our family has been through many wheels over the years. Since we are mostly an urban family, our kids found scootering the best way to get to school. My kids got bigger, so I’ve been researching options for them. Now it's time for an upgrade to our wheels and we've got some ...read more
The Best Diaper Pails and Accessories

Gretchen Hansen: Absolutely! Many serious design enthusiasts use our site. Our goal is to help filter and bring fresh ideas to everyone that uses our site by searching for amazing items.
Momtrends: What tools do you give people to become better designers?
Gretchen Hansen: We start by helping people define their style. Our interactive profile is really fun and easy – you get to design a living room in your style. The feedback we get on this process is amazing. Women say it is really accurate and we have helped them define their style. From there, we give you fabulous finds, in your style and budget every day. You can put these on a design board to visualize your room or you can enlist one of our designers to create a board for you. But you have input at every step and ultimately you make the decisions.
Momtrends: What are some of your design tips for small spaces?
Gretchen Hansen: Have fun. I love small spaces and think you should go big - for impact. With the help of some Decorist designers, I recently wallpapered my powder room in a bright graphic print and the effect is amazing. I am going to add some great antique brass fixtures and abstract prints in white with antique frames. My next project is refreshing my home office - I am going for a very light and airy look.
Momtrends:: Describe your personal home style.
Gretchen Hansen: I am a huge fan of vintage and I think it really gives a room depth and personality. My favorites are Milo Baughman, anything brutalist (I just bought a Tom Greene cubic chandelier that I am totally in love with) and California and Brazilian styles from the 60s and 70s. I love natural woods and an eclectic mix. My husband comes from a traditional east coast family so we have a lot of lovely antiques I like to mix in. It sounds crazy, but somehow it works! If you focus on items you love, things come together (at least 80%) and Decorist is there to help get it all the way there.
