Momtrends Must-Haves: High Chairs

best high chairs

First launched in 1972, Stokke's Tripp Trapp has continued to be one of the top wooden high chairs on the market and is still one of our favorite picks. Its timeless design ensures it won't go out of style and the the sold beech wood construction and 300 lb. weight limit means it will last just as long too. The high chair isn't cheap, but Stokke offers dozens of customizations to let you create your perfect high chair. It all starts with the frame which is available in two natural stains and five painted colors. You can then add on the Baby Set in eight different colors, a Seat Cushion in eight modern patterns and the Feeding Tray. (Note that these are all sold separately.) In addition to the endless adjustments for the seat and footrest, we love the Tripp Trapp for its super small footprint - just 18" x 18" - making it the perfect choice for small apartments or cozy kitchens. The chair doesn't fold up, but when it looks this good and takes up such little space, you won't want to. Buy:Amazon or Magic Beans

If you love the idea of a wooden high chair, but don't want to spend the money for Stokke, we love the affordable Keekaroo Height Right High Chair. For about $230, you get a sturdy, adjustable Height Right™ High Chair made from eco-friendly sustainable rubberwood, as well as the Infant Insert, Tray and plastic Tray Cover. The high chair comes in two choices of wood - natural or mahogany - and offers 14 different slots to adjust the seat and footrest height to best fit your child and table. The BPA-free, latex-free, easy cleaning, peel- and tear-resistant seat cushion comes in seven color choices and the plastic tray cover is easy to clean in the dishwasher or sink. Do note - assembling the Keekaroo takes some time and is definitely easier with a second pair of hands. Buy: Magic Beans or Amazon

BEST TRADITIONAL - Inglesina Gusto

best high chairs

The Inglesina Gusto was just released in April 2014, but it’s already one of our favorite all-around high chairs. It has lots of features, is easy to clean, easy to store and costs less than $150! The Gusto has a five-point harness, four different height options, three seat reclines and two tray depth positions. The seat is well-padded with a stain-resistant cover which is easy to wipe down, is removable and can be washed by hand. You can choose from two neutrals (brown or cream) or two brights (vivid blue or magenta). The large tray has a built-in cupholder, a removable insert and is dishwasher safe. Plus it can be removed with one hand. Front wheels make it easy to move the Gusto around the kitchen, and when you need to store it away, the Gusto seat folds down and the frame collapses to make the high chair compact and free-standing. Simple, full-featured, versatile and affordable – we love it all! Buy:Target or Amazon

The Nuna Zaaz is our favorite pick for fashionable parents looking for a modern high chair. The neutral color palette, straight lines and sleek profile of the Zaaz make it blend seamlessly into any modern kitchen décor. The Zaaz works as a high chair with the tray, crotch bar and 5- or 3-point harness, as a booster seat pulled up to the table with the tray removed, or as an adult chair able to hold up to 220 lbs. The high chair easily adjusts 3” up or down to find the perfect fit for your table or to transition the chair into booster seat or adult chair. One of our favorite features is that the legs of the high chair go straight down giving the Zaaz a small footprint, making it easy to pull up to the table and simple to store against a wall when not in use. The air-foam seat cushion is comfortable for babies or big kids and is super easy to wipe down. The tray is on the smaller side and doesn't have adjustable depths, but is dishwasher-safe and lays flat when you remove it to keep the remains of dinner from rolling away. Win one below! If your kitchen size or layout doesn’t leave you the luxury of leaving your high chair out all the time, you’ll want the space-saving Nano high chair from Bloom. A regular-sized high chair when open (41.5" H x 23W" x 28.5"D), the Nano folds to just 7” deep making it possible to slip into a closet or behind a door when not in use. We love the full-featured tray that is mid-sized, dishwasher-safe, has a deep lip to prevent spills, and adjusts to three different depths. Suitable for babies six months up to three years, the Nano comes in a matte black or white frame and ten unique seat color options including Snakeskin Grey, Coconut White, and Downtown Denim. The leatherette padding isn’t super thick, but the material is easy to wipe clean. The Nano doesn't offer any seat height or back adjustments, but is lightweight (just 12 lbs!) and folds down quickly and compactly making it the perfect choice when space is at a premium. If you like your high chairs with lots of features, functions and extras, you’ll love the Peg Perego Siesta. Suitable from birth up to children 45 lbs., the Siesta high chair has one of the most versatile height adjustment with nine positions to choose from, the lowest putting the seat just 14” off the ground. The buttery-soft seat cushion comes in six modern colors and offers five levels of recline to suit a sleeping infant to an upright toddler. The tray can be removed one-handed, is dishwasher-safe, and has a removable tray topper that has a built-in drink holder. The Siesta also has a rubber storage net on the back to hold bibs or toys and a place to store the tray on the back legs when not in use. Your child will stay safe with the 5-pt harness and the auto-lock caster wheels that release for easy moving with the press of a button. We seat does have a handful of crevices for crumbs, but is fairly easy to wipe. The Siesta also folds down easily and compactly for storage. And all this for less than our luxury high chair. Momtrends Must-Have Best Value High Chai - Graco TableFit

This may look like your average, run-of-the-mill plastic high chair, but the Graco TableFit high chair actually has a surprising number of features and costs less than $90. The seat offers eight height options, three recline positions, an adjustable footrest, and comes with a removable infant support pad. We love that the TableFit includes a small snack tray for between-meal noshing as well as traditional tray that has a removable, dishwasher-safe insert, a built-in cup holder, and three depth positions. The seat padding isn't as luxurious as other brands, but it is wipeable, machine-washable, and comes in five styles that we can live with. Two large, easy-to-access buttons fold the seat in half leave it free-standing for convenient storage. All in all, lots of features and functions for a small price tag. Buy:Amazon or Target

If money is no object, design-savvy parents will love the Bloom Fresco, an eye-catching high chair that is as functional as it is fashionable. Choose from four different frame colors and 14 seat pad options to create your perfect look. (Note: The seat pad comes as part of the Fresco Chrome starter kit, sold separately.) The egg-shaped chair offered three levels of recline including a lie-flat newborn cradle, a semi-recline and an upright mode. These options make the high chair suitable for newborns to kids up to 70 lbs. The Fresco has a convenient 360° swivel and a pneumatic height adjustment that adjusts from 39.75” up to 45.25”, one of the highest high chairs on the market making it ideal if you eat at your kitchen bar. This height is also great for keeping your newborn away from pets or floor grime and allows for easier eye contact with your newborn than a floor baby seat. A removable click-in/click-out aluminum safety bar can be used in all three recline positions or removed when your child is old enough to get in and out on his own. The Fresco Chrome also comes with a removable, sculpted booster seat to help position smaller infants, and two trays, a smaller tray for snack or play and a larger, adjustable feeding tray. The high chair weighs a hefty 31.5 lbs, but has scratch-resistant wheels hidden in the base for easier moving. Keep in mind – you’ll need to purchase both the Fresco Chrome (includes the frame, infant booster, feeding tray, play tray, safety bar and footrest) as well as the Starter Pack (includes the large pad, small pad, 5-pt safety harness and smart buckle). Bloom is also taking pre-orders for the new Fresco Chrome Giro which adds a pop of neon color to the Fresco frame. Buy:Amazon or Magic Beans

Babies can require a lot of gear so we love when brands create multi-use gear that lets parents get more than one function out of it like the Stokke Steps Chair. Stokke calls it a “transformable children’s chair” that can be used on its own as an adjustable child’s chair, paired with the Baby Set, Cushion and Tray to create a high chair, or used in conjunction with the Steps Bouncer for use with a newborn. This minimalist design high chair is available in either light or dark beech wood and can be paired with Stokke's four solid colored seat pads. The Baby Set connects easily to the Step's frame (no tools needed!) and allows you to use the seat with babies as young as 6 months. It comes with a 5-pt. harness and the ability to adjust the height and depth of the back to best fit your child. Add on the machine-washable Baby Set Cushion for additional comfort and the large Baby Set Tray for mealtime or play. The Steps Bouncer isn’t required for the high chair, but can be used on its own or attached to the Steps chair to make it suitable for newborns. Buy: Nordstom or Amazon

best travel high chair

There are lot of hook-on high chairs on the market, but the philandteds Lobster easily won our top award. Most importantly, it packs down flat - key for a high chair you'll be traveling with - and stows away in its included storage bag. The Lobster weighs just 3.9 lbs, but its durable fabric holds babes up to 37 lbs., is easy to wipe off, and removes easily for hand-washing out more serious messes. A 4-pt safety harness keeps wigglers in their seat and the high chair can be used with or without the included food tray. One of our favorite features of the Lobster high chair are the clamps which are easy to use and have an amazing range from 0.8" up to 3.75", letting you use the high chair on thin dining tables up to extra thick tables at the park. At home or on the go, the hook-on Lobster high chair makes mealtime with baby a breeze. Buy:Target or Amazon

BEST BOOSTER HIGH CHAIR - Mamas & Papas Baby Bud / Prince Lionheart Soft Toddler Booster Seat

We had two favorite booster seats - the full-featured Baby Bud by Mamas & Papas and the simple, affordable Prince Lionheart Toddler Booster. The Baby Bud is suitable for babies 6 months and up, and with the 3-pt harness and removable tray can be used as your full time high chair. Non-slip, adjustable feet and two harness straps help you get a secure connection to most styles of chairs. As your child gets older, you can remove the tray for eating at the table and remove the foam insert. Mamas & Papas also sells a separate activity tray that fits onto the Baby Bud for keeping baby amused before food is ready. Buy:Amazon

If you don't need lots of features and are just looking for a simple solution to give your toddler a boost at the table, we love the affordable Prince Lionheart Toddler Booster. best new high chair

One of our favorite newcomers to the market is the OXO Seedling high chair, released in November 2013. The Seedling is a solid contender if you’re looking for an affordable, plastic high chair with lots of features. Suitable for infants 4 months old to children 3 years old or 45 lbs., the Seedling is easy to adjust between its five height settings and three recline positions to help you find the perfect position for your tot. The large tray has a dishwasher-safe insert, can be removed one-handed, and has five depth adjustment options – more than most high chairs we’ve seen. The Seedling is available in four solid colors – blue, green, graphite and mocha – and the padding is both easy to wipe clean and machine washable when needed. The high chair doesn’t fold up (though it can be disassembled) and has four individual locking wheels so it’s best for houses where it can be left out and not moved around often. But for only $150, we love the features and style offered by the OXO Seedling. Buy: Amazon or Kohl's
