Since I live in NYC, media capital of the East, I get to go to a lot of press events. I see more toys than you could possibly imagine. And as you may have already noticed, I don't write about much in the way of battery-operated or plastic toys. So I have to hunt, and hunt, and hunt.
When I find companies like HearthSong and Magic Cabin, my heart simply leaps. It makes me feel like I'm not alone out there. Other parents are trying to dim the "noise" surrounding their children. That's not to say Dora, Spiderman and the Wiggles don't have their place, but I do love a toy that inspires imagination.
From Hearth Song, I am ordering the Wooden Cookies set. It's perfect for the baby to participate in all the holiday merriment! And when my older daughter clamors for more sugar cookies, I can appease her with these. The quality is simply stunning. 12 cookies+ 12 toppings = a fun play experience for a group of kids. These toys will outlast more than one generation. ($19.98)
My pick from Magic Cabin is the Skuut. This wooden toddler is the ultimate "first ride" for toddlers ages 2-5. Unlike the dumpy plastics trikes, this expertly crafted bike is made from durable hardwood. To keep the ride smooth and safe, the Skuut is outfitted with fat tires. No pedals--this bike is all about balance and learning to steer on kid power. ($84.98)
And here's something extra fun...HearthSong is celebrating 25 years with a $25K Scholarship Sweepstakes.
