With the start of school just a week away, my husband and I tapped my generous parents for a bit of babysitting. We're not talking about a single romantic dinner. Nope, my parents signed on for three full nights. This allowed my husband and I to getaway on our first non-work related retreat since the kids were born (that would be 2005).
Other than reconnecting with my husband I was thrilled to reconnect with my love of books. I finished two books cover to cover. I started with Little Bee: A Novel. Chris Cleave's novel is by no means meant to be a beach read. It's a weighty book about immigration and political turmoil. This page turner also tackles marriage and depression. Don't know if it was being able to read for hours uninterrupted or the beauty of the prose...but I devoured this book.
Then I jumped into a lighter read The Package Deal: My (not-so) Glamorous Transition from Single Gal to Instant Mom. This one is by fellow blogger, Izzy Rose. She writes of career choices, cross-country moves and the ups and downs of being a stepmother. Nothing wicked here except her wit. Check out her blog Stepmothersmilk.com for a taste of her style.
Have you carved out some time for books or other non-kid endeavors this week? I'd love to hear about it.
