A massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake has hit Japan, triggering a deadly tsunami. Japanese media report that the death toll is rising and thousands are missing. It is the worst earthquake to hit Japan in at least a century and has sparked dozens of fires, including in more than 30 buildings in Tokyo and an oil refinery near the city. The current total is staggering: The police have listed a new death toll of 8,649 with 13,261 missing--and the numbers keep going up. More than 19,000 families have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Save the Children aims to bring help in the form of Child Friendly Spaces, The goal is to allow children to return to as normal an environment as possible (given the circumstances). The idea is to relieve the stress on parents and to give them a break from childcare duties as they register for emergency assistance.

"Our experience in decades of disaster response shows us that children must be returned to a normal routine as quickly as possible to help ward off the risk of long-term psychological problems," says Ian Woolverton, Save the Children Media Manager.

This major natural disaster has caused large scale damage along Japan's east coast. It was a normal school day in Japan and many children were separated from their parents when disaster struck. Now the rebuilding begins and you can help.
