There’s a great thing and a not-so-great thing about having a summer birthday as a kid. On the up side—you get to have BBQs and pool parties and relay races and all sorts of fun outdoor celebrations… On the other hand, there’s a good chance many of your friends will be away at sleepaway camp or traveling with family or just too plain busy to give up a precious summer Saturday.
My almost three year old doesn’t have to worry that his friends will be at camp—at least not for a few years. But still, scheduling his big July circus-and-carnival-themed pool party has proven to be a challenge. Turns out, all his little school and neighborhood friends will be away with their families. (And how much fun could a toddler birthday party actually be with all adults?!)
And, so now, not only am I throwing a big July carnival-circus celebration the weekend of his actual birthday, I’m also planning a pool party play date in June to align with the end of nursery school and the beginning of Grant’s “birthday month!” That way, he can celebrate with all of his playmates. (This kid has no idea how good he’s got it.)
Getting ready for one—let alone two—parties can be expensive—and so I’m trying to plan strategically and spend smarter. Luckily, I’ve got my Plenti rewards card in my wallet and the accompanying app downloaded on my phone.
In case you missed my last post, allow me to catch you up… Plenti is a multi-brand rewards program, that’s free to join, and offers members various ways to save and earn points on things they already shop for every day, regardless of payment method—meaning, you can pay with cash, credit, or debit, and still use and accumulate Plenti points.
So, for example, I plan to set up a “baby bar” at both parties with a few essentials for the kiddies—sunscreen, swim diapers, juice boxes, and waters. Before shopping for these items, I browsed the Plenti app and saw two relevant deals: “Get 500 Points after you spend $25 on eligible purchases in a single transaction at Rite Aid,” and “Earn 200 points after your buy two brand sun-care items in a single transaction at Rite Aid.” Well, I was going to buy these items anyway, and now the points I’ve earned will help me save on a future purchase at participating Plenti partners. Maybe I’ll be able to redeem my points for a cute purchase at Macy’s for the kids—like a swimsuit for his big party or a special birthday shirt! (Better yet, maybe I’ll be able to redeem those points for an even cuter special shirt for the birthday boy’s mama! Wink-wink.)
Whether you’re planning a BBQ, throwing a pool party, heading on a road trip, or embarking on a warm-weather adventure, the truth is: summer is full of fun and full of expenses. Why not get the most mileage out of the purchase you have to make. Even fueling up at your local Exxon station could potentially help you earn points and save money. You can start accruing points right away at partners that include AT&T, Exxon, Mobil, Macy’s , Nationwide Insurance, Rite Aid, Direct Energy, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, and Hulu. Enroll today at www.plenti.com, and get more bang for your buck—because, more is better than less. Just like two parties is better than one.
