Do You Have a Signature Mom or Family Style?

Do you ever have those days when you get dressed, look in the mirror and think, "THIS is the best outfit ever!"? Every once in a while I do, and it's surely the sign of a good day. I think that reaction is also a good indication of my true style. Signature style, if you will.

Now, let me be clear: if someone said, "Hey, Kate, what's your signature style?" I'd be all, "Ya, clothes. I dunno." It's hard to describe my evolving tastes, but I know a favorite outfit when I wear it. And, in fact, I like the outfit I'm sharing below so much that when Garnet Hill asked me to share my and my family's signature style I knew just the ensemble to share.

Signature Mom Style

BUTTON DOWN & SKINNY JEANS. It took me a while to convert to skinny jeans, but now that I have they are a staple in my wardrobe. My closet is also full of button down and popover shirts. And, no shame in my game, because I like to wear them loose and untucked to cover the skinny-factor in skinny jeans. The sweater vest in this outfit is my favorite. The moot-inspired and textured sweater add a little interest and fun. And, finally, I was also late to the bootie game, but I think they're a nice change of pace from my regular boots over skinny jeans.

Even though I have a hard time putting my signature style into words, I have some friends who have fantastic style to spare.

LEGGINGS & A TUNIC: Kristin at Bon Bon Rose Girls loves pairing leggings with fun patterned tunics. And who can blame her? Looks amazing!

JEANS & A BLAZER: Jill at Glamamom says her style go-to is denim and a sleek blazer. I love the embellished flats.

Keeping your New Year's resolutions

The New Year is off to a fresh start, and many of us are committed to doing something or many things with more intention this year. But it's tough to stay on track. In fact, “Quitters Day”, which falls on January 14th this year, is the day when most people give up. How can you more

The Best Overnight French Toast Recipe

We've hit the winter lull--that lengthy stretch of season with no plans, no parties, nothing to do, and nowhere to go. I have to admit that at first, I welcomed the quiet obligation-free weekends of January. After the nonstop hustle-bustle pace of November and December, my family more

Signature Family Style

Garnet Hill is encouraging all of us to share our signature style, but for moms that style is tied to what our family style. Most days, and certainly on important days, I pick out the clothes for the entire family. Just like picking a photo that represented my style, I knew exactly the photo to share to describe our family style.

Last Thanksgiving we celebrated with friends at an informal dinner and get together. I wore a sheer navy button down, navy midi skirt, boots and an infinity scarf. I totally admit that for special occasions, I try to match and coordinate the whole family but this Thanksgiving was less about us matching one another and more about them wearing their own cute looks. Can't go wrong with a sweater vest on a little boy. My older son looks great in button downs. And then there's my daughter - wearing a Christmas dress on Thanksgiving. Just getting a head start!

For Christmas and my husband's recent promotion ceremony, I was on point with the matching / coordinating business. For Christmas, we wore black, red and gray and I LOVE how it looks in photos. Because, honestly, that's usually what I'm thinking about when putting together our ensembles.

For the promotion ceremony, I knew my husband would be wearing his uniform so I didn't want us to clash with his navy. I wore the same navy midi skirt from Thanksgiving with a cream sweater. The kids wore navy and cream, too. In both coordinating family signature style looks, I do love to add lots of patterns so we don't look too matchy-matchy. Houndstooth, plaid and my patterned tights above. Plaid, stripes and tone-on-tone florals below.
