Beauty & Beyond: Six Tips for Partying Pretty

Once Halloween is hiding in the shadows until next year, it’s time to start thinking about the holiday party season. Because look…it’s just a calendar pages away. I’ve gathered a few tips, so you can face the endless champagne toasts with style.

It’s all about hair accessories this holiday season. Keep your strays in place with a quick flat iron (ISO's Mini Light fits into your party clutch and you can plug it into you car cigarette lighter to heat it up quickly). Pin back strands of romantic curls with a simple vintage brooch. Or get creative by weaving a ribbon into a side braid, or twisting a glittery necklace into your chignon for eye-catching touches of sparkle. Goody has these adorable sequin butterflies that would look amazing in a playful cluster surrounding the perfectly done bun.

Go for the gold (or silver) with glitter. Transform your everyday makeup into a gorgeous holiday look with just one product—glitter. This sparkly sensation was all over the runways for fall, from Thakoon to Chanel. Although you might be tempted to do otherwise, glam up just one feature. Think shiny flecks for eyes, an iridescent sheen on cheekbones or a shimmery glow to your lips. For the eyes, dab a small amount of glitter like Make Up For Ever’s Metallic Tan Glitter onto lids with a flat concealer brush. Not only is it pretty, but it brightens and opens your eyes. One of my faves is Urban Decay's new Moondust in Glitter Rock or Space Cowboy. For extra sparkle, try Rusk’s limited edition Being Sexy silver glitter hairspray, a subtle shimmer that catches the light just right. And of course, top things off with glittery nails. Gelish MINI colors has new glitter polishes this season, such as Am I Making You Gelish? (silver holographic glitter), All That Glitters Is Gold (gold glitter) and Life of The Party (red glitter).

Toss the mascara. All that applying and removing and applying and removing and applying can wear your lashes thin. Think about getting lash extensions, an instant eye lift and a great pick-me-up for the holidays. These semi-permanent alternatives to fake strips or mascara can be as dramatic as you please. They’re applied one at a time to your natural lashes and last up to four weeks (probably the length of your party season). Choose crystals or rainbow colored lashes, along with natural or synthetic mink. But this is not a last-minute extravagance. Lashes must stay dry for 24 hours, so it’s best to get them applied at least a day before your first big event.

Retrieve your summer glow. Make them wonder where you’ve been with a quick spray tan. The latest in safe tanning, this airbrush process is performed by hand in 15 minutes and is completely customized to your skin. Most airbrush tans last up to 10 days, so you can certainly squeeze at least one or two parties out of each sunless session.

Battle bloat with the right foods. When a party circuit calls for trendy body-con fashions, ensure you fit every curve by avoiding foods that cause temporary bloat. The day before your event, skip broccoli, onions, carbonated sodas and Brussels sprouts, which can createexcess gas. Also avoid raw veggies, which can stay in the stomach longer, making you look and feel bloated.

Wake up tired eyes. When dark circles prove your packed social calendar, thinly slice a potato and apply the slices under your eyes for 10 minutes. Potato juice contains the enzyme catecholase, which is used in cosmetics as a skin lightener. If your party clutch isn’t the only bag you’re carrying, try witch hazel to reduce puffiness. Keep a small amount in the refrigerator and soak two cotton pads in it. Apply one pad to each closed lid for five minutes.

Now you can be sure you'll party pretty.
