Beauty Buzz: Fab Finds for Spring

As I take out my aesthetically displeasing (plain black plastic) but über-functional Make Up For Ever compact, I sigh at the notion that there must be a way to make a compact's outside as beautiful as the inside powder makes you.

The angels heard my prayer (I'm still waiting for them to help out with these five extra pounds...hello, can you hear me?). Sulwhasoo's gorgeous limited edition Shine Classic Powder Compact is now available in five exclusive styles through this summer.

Inspired by the most Korean symbols of beauty (like the peony and Prunus Mume), they represent this country's traditional artistic expression and beauty. In other words, they are simply lovely.

One of my favorites is iconic six-petal plum blossom print (seen in the center and right photos). Found on the flower-patterned doors of Buddhist temples, the flower evokes the infinite beauty of curves and straight lines. The color within reflects the apricot color of plum blossom coming into bloom right about now.

This compact is more than just a pretty face. The luxurious powder is based on medicinal herbs that imparts a smooth and delicate finish. This particular compact has plum blossom extracts that have the same protective benefits that shield the delicate flower from the elements.

I would hardly take this compact to the beach, but I can definitely see myself grabbing it out of my new Kate Spade (can't wait to use) as I’m sitting on a chic outdoor patio (can't wait to do), sipping Prosecco and lunching with the ladies. Angels, thanks for the compact. Next up, please bring the spring.

Sulwhasoo Shine Classic Powder Compact is available only at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman for $150.

My husband is flaky. Now just wait a minute. Before you go all shaking your head and widening your eyes in disbelief that I would toss him under the bus like that, let me explain.

He's not really flaky. He just suffers from seborrheic dermatitis. It’s not crazy out of control, but let’s just say there are times he’s thankful he looks amazing in a fedora.

I’m not sharing a crazy family secret with you. He’ll actually be the first person to tell you he has this skin condition because he’s always looking for help. He can never seem to find the right stuff. T-Gel shampoo works for a bit. Then it stops. Flakes. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo works for a bit. Then it stops. Flakes.

The Seaweed Bath Co. is dedicated to fighting dry, flaking and scaling skin naturally. A long-time psoriasis sufferer, founder Adam Grossman took the advice of his derms to soak in the ocean as often as possible to heart…and to head. The ocean's nutrients improve the effects of psoriasis and eczema for many sufferers, but since a sea soak isn’t always in our dayplanner, he invented Wildly Natural Seaweed Argan Shampoos and Conditioners. They combine seaweed extract with soothing Argan Oil from Morocco, Vitamin E, aloe vera and pro-vitamin B5 to gently cleanse and moisturize both hair and scalp.

Seaweed isn’t the newest ingredient to fall off the beauty truck. Northern European and Asian cultures have pulled it from nutrient-rich waters for centuries to alleviate conditions that lead to red, irritated skin.

The one thing that lets me know my husband is having a bad hair/scalp day is the smell. Most flake-fighting shampoos stink. I guess they figure if you don't want to get up close to the person with flakes, you won’t see the flakes. Genius. The Seaweed Bath Co. line only smells like their fresh scents of citrus, peppermint or lavender. There’s even an unscented one.

My husband said bring it on, argan. Show him whatcha got, seaweed. Good news: It’s been a few days of using the shampoo and it doesn’t seem to be flaking out on him.

The Seaweed Bath Co shampoos and conditioners are available at Whole Foods for $16.89.
