I can only twist my hair back into a pony so many times without looking lazy. But for some reason, during the summer, I give up on trying to be chic. My locks are just after-thoughts beyond my keep-cool outfit and stay-in-place-even-though-I'm-sweating makeup. I have to snap out of this funk.

Since your summer social calendar is packed with fun activities and gatherings (think BBQs, outdoor weddings and beach time), your hair needs to be doing something other than just hanging there. And with high heat and humidity, you also need to make your style last throughout the day and night.

I asked Miami Beach salon owner and stylist to stars the likes of Catherine Deneuve, Denise Richards and Padma Lakshmi Danny Jelaca for some fun go-to summer 'dos...

For the beach

When you’re at the beach, the last thing you want is your hair hanging in your face and making you all sweaty. A messy top knot is an on-trend way to keep your hair off your face and this look is very versatile. Want a sexier beach look? Bring the bun down to the middle of your head and add twists or braids on the sides.

For a pool party

Whether you plan on taking a dip or not, the splish and splash is bound to end up in your hair. Your hair can be brittle when wet, so avoid pulling it back with an elastic tie. For this situation, bobby pins are the way to go. For a little volume, gather the front section, pouf with your fingers then twist the end and pin down. To keep flyaways from your face, pull on-inch sections from the sides, twist and pin.

For a backyard BBQ

fishtail

Barbequing means lots of food, drinks and socializing, so you want to be on point with your hairstyle. Give your friends something to talk about with a fancy fishtail braid. In order to create a perfect fishtail, your hair needs to be somewhat clean but definitely manageable. The smoother the better – then the pieces for the braid don’t get tangled when creating the “cross and tuck” pattern. This style also keeps hair out of your delicious eats.

For an outdoor wedding

Let’s face it– your flat-ironed hair is not going to hold up in the humidity and flat, wavy hair is no way to impress. Instead, be the best looking guest with a flirty wrap ponytail. After shampooing, let your hair dry naturally or use a curling iron to create loose, messy waves. Pull back a ponytail in the middle of your head but leave the sides out. Secure with an elastic band and incorporate the side pieces into the pony by wrapping them around the elastic. Secure with pins and finish with hairspray.
