Beauty & Beyond: Bye Bye Fall

Although the calendar still reads one more week of summer, our Canadian geese are starting to fly the coop and I'm pretty sure I wore a hoodie the other day. Read: it's fall.

With my autumn beauty trend report waiting in the wings (next week, ladies), I've found two gotta-get products for you to begin the seasonal transition. Reorganizing your closet is up to you.

NYFW's S/S14 runways showed that tousled locks were definitely on-trend for next year. If someone high up on the "what's cool" food chain is telling us that we don't need to do our 'do, then I say why not start the fad early? Besides this fall's low pony trend does still need some volume on the crown, and the volume that we saw on F/W13 runways needs...well...volume.

Enter HIclips. These plastic styling clips add volume to your hair by lifting your hair roots while it dries. You can use them during airdrying (I misted on a little volumizer while drying to give it a little boost) or during blowdrying (consider these those pairs of extra hands you wanted while styling).

The three-pronged clips are lightweight but hold quite a bit of hair. Just slide them into your 'do and dry as you desire. They add hold at the roots by lifting for you. Yes, during the process you look like a Mouseketeer or Toni Basil in the Mickey video (Exhibit A, my above photo). But it's worth the side eye from your family.

For $14.95, you get two HIclips per box at hiclips.com.

The Best Overnight French Toast Recipe

We've hit the winter lull--that lengthy stretch of season with no plans, no parties, nothing to do, and nowhere to go. I have to admit that at first, I welcomed the quiet obligation-free weekends of January. After the nonstop hustle-bustle pace of November and December, my family ...read more

You’re also probably looking a little leathery after all that summer sun, so take this time to start fresh with a good exfoliation. Although I do love a good scrub, sometimes it’s better to be a little gentler (especially as skin ages).

I was recently introduced to Rene, a French lovely. She's new on the block and trés chic. She gave me diamonds, so I like her. The Diamond Collection by Rene 31° harnesses the powers of diamond dust to give your skin some beauty bling. For exfoliation I like the Detox Peeling Gel. It’s infused with micro fine diamond powder that gently sloughs off dead skin cells and stimulates the growth of new ones. It also has a blend of anti-oxidant berries (acai, goji, maqui and mangosteen) and fruits (papaya, noni and pomegranate) to help with the glowing process.

They also elude to the fact that your skin needs to stay at 31° C (or 87° F, for those of us not in Europe) in order to keep calm. With the impending chiller temps and saying bye-bye to the crazy heat, we’re in for a bit of a Fahrenheit flux. The entire collection helps to provide a thermal barrier by balancing your skin’s temps. Consider this a nice pairing with that hoodie you just unpacked for yourself.

Diamond Detox Peeling Gel is available for $66 at reneskin.com.
