When my first baby was born, I was overwhelmed with emotion. And pain. And anxiety. I was so physically and mentally exhausted, I couldn’t even fathom the concept of breastfeeding. And so I didn’t. When the nurses and lactation consultants paid their visits, I remained resolute—this baby of mine would be formula fed, and no one was going to persuade me otherwise or make me feel guilty about it.
Nevertheless, two weeks later, I held my son to my chest and cried. Blame it on the hormones (or, perhaps, the silent judgment of family and friends), but I felt immensely sad that I hadn’t tried.
So, when I became pregnant for the second time, I vowed that I would make an attempt. I wasn’t going to set grand expectations, but I’d go with the flow (pardon the pun), and give it my best. The first few days and weeks were difficult, but then we found our groove and fell into a relaxing rhythm. Nursing just felt right.
Not to say that breastfeeding hasn’t had its challenges since then. I’ve suffered some serious back and neck pain from poor positioning, and I still struggle with the demands of scheduling. As a busy working mom, I can’t always have my little one attached to the nipple. It’s just not realistic for my lifestyle. I try to pump as much as possible, but I’ve recently started supplementing with formula too. For me, it’s the best of both worlds: She gets the benefits of breast milk. I get the bonding experience I adore and the independence I crave.
That’s why I was so happy to learn that the Honest Company has launched a feeding collection for moms and babies. With no agenda and no judgment, Honest offers items for moms who choose to breastfeed, formula feed, or do a combination of both. Honest knows that regardless of Mom’s “feeding” choice, she wants the best for her child. And that’s why everything is made with Baby’s health and well-being in mind—from the brand new organic formula and DHA to the bottles and accessories.
"The Honest Company is committed to transforming the experience of feeding. We’re here to help you understand that there are no right or wrong answers, and offer the best possible options to sustain your needs (no matter what they are) and support your choices (no matter who you may be)... All parents deserve and require support and love as they provide early nourishment for their children. Honest believes in and is committed to this kind of universal support for parents and babies," Honest co-founder Christopher Gavigan told us in our exclusive interview.
As a loyal fan of the Honest Company, I was excited to try a few products from this new category. Earlier, I alluded to back and neck pain. As my daughter gets bigger, I continue to have a hard time finding the optimal feeding position for her growing body. I’ve tried regular pillows, U-shaped pillows, and other makeshift props, but I always end up with a sore neck from hunching (or sore arms from holding her up). But the Honest nursing pillow struck me as different—and so I was eager to give it a try.
First and foremost, it’s made without the toxic foams, adhesives, flame retardants and harsh chemicals found in many other breastfeeding pillows. It features a 100-percent organic cotton plush top and bolster—which is removable and washable too.
And, yes, it has given me (and my muscles!) the relief I’ve been seeking. It’s sturdier and firmer than other breastfeeding pillows I’ve tried, and its slight angle allows Baby to rest comfortably without sinking into it—so I don’t have to bend over. You can fasten the pillow behind your back with a clip for a more secure placement—so it won’t shift while you’re feeding. And, finally, I’m absolutely in love with the built-in vented privacy cover. It’s light and breathable but allows for discretion and privacy when needed. The pillow also comes with an organic cotton storage bag for traveling and safe-keeping. I couldn’t recommend this item any more. It’s been a game changer for me.
After having success with the nursing pillow, I’m definitely looking to try a few more finds from Honest. I’ll certainly give the Natural Feeding Baby Bottles a shot. My little one gets so uncomfortable with gas, and these squeezable bottles are designed with an integrated tri-vent system to reduce gas, colic, reflux, and spit up. They’re also made with medical-grade silicone; and the a peristaltic nipple closely mimics the breast.
The Certified Organic Premium Infant Formula is also something I am eager to try. When I can’t breastfeed my baby, I want her to have a nutritionally complete and safe formula. Carefully modeled after breast milk, easy to digest, and meticulously blended using ingredients sourced from organic farms, it contains no GMOs and is free of potentially harmful (and, frankly, scary) ingredients. "I believe the infant formula is special. I worked for many years to ensure that our formula was scientifically researched and carefully crafted to meet the high nutritional standards established by the FDA, " Gavigan said.
Curious, we asked Gavigan if the company plans to expand its feeding collection—because we're already excited to see what's next. "We love to never slow down. It's entirely satisfying to help and be in service of our members and parents today. We all truly love it. And of course, we see a ton of great innovative opportunities—so stay tuned."... I most certainly will.
Like all moms, I want my baby to thrive. I choose to breastfeed. I choose to formula feed. I choose to be an Honest mom. I’m so glad this amazing company is now here to help me and my little one on this incredible journey.
