Tips for Traveling in Style

I believe in traveling in style. That doesn’t mean trunks and trunks of luggage. It’ means packing smart. On a recent jaunt to Paris with Mr. Momtrends, I packed a swank bag from Jane Marvel. It was an incredible carry-on and went with me all over Paris. This is me in the Luxembourg Gardens. We’d spent the day shopping and just had a little picnic snack in the park.

On this particular day I logged 9 miles of walking (I know because I was carrying my Striiv pedometer). So I had to dress comfortably. I know Paris really well, I have favorite spots I love to visit (look for my Paris recap soon) and we do most of our touring of foot or via metro. The weather was excellent when we were there. I didn’t even need a coat as we walked through St. Germain.

The look I was going for was effortless chic. Something that would work in a cafe, park or fairly chic boutique. I wore my Hush Puppies suede boots (so comfortable and so chic) paired with j brand skinnies. On top I had a white tee with an Avon (yes Avon) tweedy sweater. The scarf makes the outfit. It’s a silk & wool blend and I picked it up at a boutique just outside the Place Des Vosges.

All these pieces got worked and re-worked on my 4-day stay. When Mr. Momtrends and I travel it’s always carry-on. Even when we took a year off to see the world, I packed everything in a backpack. So the morale of the story is, you don’t need a lot of stuff to be chic. It’s all about accessories and attitude. Oh, and don’t forget your chic sunglasses. This pair is from Reed Krakoff and I think they make me look like a jet setter even in a Gap tee.

Now it’s your turn to show off your style. I want to see what you’ve put together and give you a chance at a fun giveaway.

One lucky reader is going to get a Jane Marvel Jetsetter bag in her choice of color ($124 value!). To enter, simply link up your fashion post of the week. This coated canvas bag has a simple, timeless shape. I picked the python (which goes with everything!). All the Jetsetter bags feature: Laminated Canvas with PU trim and straps, Jane Marvel logo lining, Zipper top, Feet on the bottom for extra support, inside zip pockets and I loved the matching sleep mask in clear zip pouch!

Jane is all about high-quality, inexpensive, fabulous handbags, totes and travel gear, in great colors and patterns, and fun! Check out her website at! Designer Jane Marvel says, “When you feel good about how you look, you exude confidence, and that is always a good thing”.

Jane is a busy wife, mother of two boys and New York City-based entrepreneur. Like the rest of us, she has limited time to pull her wardrobe together every day, and couldn’t find enough great quality bags at an affordable price! So Jane created this Marvel-ous Collection of lifestyle bags and accessories, to give all women lots of chic options in of-the-moment colors, finishes and shapes.

  • Love your boots, was surprised to read they are Hush Puppies, how comfy they must be! You look great cruising all over Paris … and I am impressed you get all your stuff into a carryon! Maybe in my past, but not anymore with a toddler and carseat and stroller and … oh my, all the stuff we just had to cart for our quick Thanksgiving trip. Ugh. Anyway … you look great! Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful.

    • We didn’t bring the kids…that is tricky to pull off carry on wise. Glad you stopped by.

  • oh, and I meant to comment about the giveaway tote, it’s awesome, my fingers are crossed!!

  • Jen Allo

Jane Marvel’s bags are beauties. Updating my “purse” and downsizing from the diaper bag that I currently sport would be simply … Amazing. You look great! Gotta love a GAP t-shirt. I hope I can figure out how to link up my style photo. Thanks for the opportunity. Excited. 😉

    • Its pretty easy jen, all you need is a url for the photo.

  • I am soooo excited that Avon makes clothing! [My wallet’s not though..]

    • The prices are pretty good.

  • No lie….I was looking at travel totes online last night. I need one badly! Off to check these out with hopes that I win!

  • I love Paris! I went for the first time this summer (and wrote several blog posts about it) and I am going again the end of this week! You are dressed very fashionable for Paris touring. I think I did pretty well this summer, but this week my challenge will be dressing for the cold! I bought a very chic black down coat (as chic as down can be!).

    • it’s tough in the winter, but those parisianne ladies do it

  • Looking effortlessly chic here..great boots…
I love your suggestions for packing well, I totally agree…hubs and I are in Boston this weekend for a wedding…spending an extra day or two…and will be packing SMART for sure.
Happy Monday- hope you had a lovely thanksgiving.

    • the hardest part is paring down the shoes.

  • You look so chic and cozy in those boots and slouchy cardigan! I love it! The boots are amazing too! Thanks for hosting this week’s Monday Mingle! I could use a new tote so my fingers and toes will be crossed all week! 🙂

  • I took one look at the boots and couldn’t imagine traveling all over in them until I saw they were Hush Puppies! I am heading to figure out where I can find a pair.

I am so excited about the giveaway. What a cute bag.

    • Yep, my fashion secret–hush puppies!

  • Nicole, you are working those boots! I love them on you. And I love that they were comfortable to tour the city in. (Wow… you took a year off to travel? That’s so fabulous! That has always been a dream of mine.)

    • Do it! You’ll never regret travel.

  • What a cute outfit! It looks super comfy and perfect for traveling.

  • I envy your ability to do so much with just a carry on… and especially traveling for a year with just a backpack! I’d probably end up ransacking a boutique about a month in.

    • LOL! We did shop along the way and shipped some stuff home.

  • One year with a backpack? You are awesome! I can’t even change at a friends house with one bag!

    • I know it took some discipline, but now I am hooked on traveling light.

  • Lucky you to be in Paris!! Love the boots…you look great!

    • Thanks! The boots are funky and got a lot of compliments in Paris.

  • betsy

We went to China last year my favorite accessory was a red wool scarf it was warm and added a little style. Love the bag.

  • I will have to show this post to my husband who always tries to get me to wear tennis shoes when we travel to faraway places. He thinks only rubber soled, flat shoes can be comfortable – but you’ve proved his theory wrong.

I am so glad to have found you! I will be sure to come back to visit often!

    • Oh no, running shoes and sneakers won’t cut it in Paris!

  • You look amazing! I’m so happy I found your blog! I linked up, do I need to add the Monday Mingle button to my blog?

    • Mandy–totally optional. Love for you to link, but not required 🙂

  • I like travelling in style too. But is also has to be practical. For example I always wear trousers and something warm in planes. I pack travel capsules but still always struggle to pack minimal. That is an ongoing challenge while traveling. I will have to learn because as I get older I can lift less!

    • I am a leggings girl when it comes to planes. Comfort comes first…then I work in the style.

  • Great boots – and they look comfy! I paired my dresses with oxford/ballet flats for walking around Paris last summer, and they were comfortable for walking around for 16 hour days.

  • Thank you for taking time to visit and comment my blog. It is an honor to know your site. You look fabulous with your attire. I like the bag and your boots! And most of all your are gorgeous! ^_^

  • Aaah, Paris! One of these days, the Hubs & I are going to take a trip to Europe. You look fabulous. I just love those boots!

  • That trip sounded amazing! It’s always great to escape the kids and spend a little time with your man. Thanks for telling me about the link up…I love meeting/reading about other stylish mamas!

  • The jet setter bag is great!!! My husband and I are finally taking a trip in May ( first in 5 years) it would be great to take along!

    • you got to roll everything and first pick the shoes–then the clothes.

  • Kellie O’Shields

I love this tote!!!! This would be a great Christmas gift to myself!!!

  • Nicole, you look Parisienne chic, as always. I can’t wait to read your Paris posts. We’ll be going to Paris as a family for the holidays and will need all the advice – where to eat, where to go and look chic while we’re doing it! I am also challenging my whole family to go carry-on (including me!) so any tips and tricks will be appreciated. Looking forward to reading it. xo Pam.
