Monday Mingle: Off The Shoulder Tops

styling shorts for summer

I’m taking on two of the hottest summer trends: the off the shoulder top and shorts. While shorts are nothing new, we’re now seeing them getting more and more dressed up. You don’t have to just be Beyonce to pull off heels and shorts, I’m here to bear witness that just about anyone can pull this off without looking trashy or like you are trying too hard.

Black Cuff | Black Shoes | Off The Shoulder Blouse (H&M) | Eyelet Shorts

To keep it classy, you’ve got to keep it simple. Black and white is a good place to start. Colors that we can all pull off, colors that you likely already own. I got both pieces at H&M (woohoo not too expensive). I paired them with a pair of Dolce Vita heels from last year and a black cuff from ShinyMix.

The shoes are incredibly comfortable and work with these eyelet shorts. The heel isn’t too high so I can walk in them. This look is great to wear for a daytime look or a outfit for travel.

Playing with Off the Shoulder Tops

As for the off the shoulder look, I wasn’t sure about this trend. I thought it might be too young for me. But I went for it. This top is easy and breezy. I thought the bows on the shoulders make it playful. H&M is a perfect place to shop for these trends. Chances are this top won’t be “in” next year. Spending more than $50 on it doesn’t make sense.

Summer is all about showing a little skin, but this outfit doesn’t look inappropriate or like I’m ready for a nightclub.

summmer shorts

And may I mention one more fun thing about shorts? They are so much better than mini shirts. What a pain, all that maneuvering to keep yourself covered. Shorts keep you cool without all the wardrobe maintenance.

Summer Shorts Styling Tips:

  • Look for shorts that hug curves but aren’t too tight–especially if you are showing skin on top.
  • Opt for a heel that ins’t too high.
  • Keep the accessories simple. I added a simple drop earring and a cuff.
  • Hair and makeup should be relatively simple. Ponytails look great too!

What do you think? Are you keen on either of these trends for summer? Let me know what you’ve been wearing (andy off the shoulder tops?) and I hope you’ll join the Monday Mingle fun.

Monday Mingle: Fourth of July Outfit

monday mingle

Time for a 4th of July fashion report. Once again, these photos have been shot by my 7 year old and for the first time, a photo by my 5 year old (the main photo above). When I told them the theme of the shoot they were so excited. It’s the perfect time to wear stripes and shorts!

It’s been super hot out East. And so very humid. While I love dresses, I think shorts are just right for the holiday–since it tends to be a family affair. With a big picnic planned, I want to be able to play with the kids. The freedom of shorts–especially this stretch pique pair from C. Wonder is perfect for the holiday. I paired the shorts (new) with a sweater (old–from TJMaxx, no longer has a label!) and a coral necklace for a patriotic outfit.

red, white and blue outfit

Don’t think I am crazy for putting a sweater on in July! It has a really open weave and check out the back…breezy!

These wedge sandals are from last year (Tory Burch) and I can always find another reason to bring them out to share!

The bag was from my trip to Italy this year. Do you know the brand Piquadro? They mostly make business bags that are popular in Europe. They are trying to expand to the US. I’m doing my part!

A note about the hair. I’ve been swimming a lot (training for a triathlon in July). My hair is wet all the time. I’ve been using the swimcap treatment from Phillip Kingsley to protect it from sun an chemicals and it feels pretty good, but it’s so not worth the effort to blow it out when it’s just going to get wet again in a few hours. I’ve been mastering the quick braided bun. In fact, I often leave in a little conditioner and whip it up into a bun. Lazy? Maybe, but perfect for summer!

Now what about you? Do you have a favorite beach look? I hope you’ll share what you’ve been wearing on Monday Mingle. Monday Mingle is a fashionable collaboration between me, Jill from Glamamom and Kristin from BonBonRoseGirls. C. Wonder Summer Style

c wonder outfit

C. Wonder has caught my eye lately. I’ve been walking by the Soho store a bunch and the windows just draw me in. Growing up in Annapolis, I was a total prepster. As I’ve matured, I’ve still maintained strong ties to preppy-dom. Brights colors and crisp silhouettes still make me so happy. C.Wonder manages to infuse a little edge to the preppyness. AND the prices are not scary. I can put together a full summer look at the store without going over budget.

It’s gotten a little steamy out East. When I thought about how to style C.Wonder, shorts instantly popped into my head. These shorts are a great length and I like them paired with a small heel and fun top. I wore this out to dinner with friends and to an event–rave reviews all around. Color + good cut = style succes.

The outfit: C.Wonder Eyelet Cotton Short ($78; I bought it in two colors–white and navy!) and Ikat Tunic ($88)

The accessories: Abstract Ikat Clutch ($48); Pave Drop Earrings ($48); Logo Clover Enamel Layering Necklace ($68). Plus my Prada gold sandals.

Shorts You Need this Summer

Ready for Summer with LOFT

I’m showing off some of my favorite shorts and tees for spring. If you hadn’t heard shorts are going to be vital to staying trendy this season. Thankfully, it’s so easy to put together a chic look. You need a printed short, a cute tee, and a wedge shoe. Accessorize with some boho jewelry and you’re done.

To get this look, I worked with LOFT. They set me up with a bunch of Striped Linen Tees to get inspired ($34.50). I loved all the styles, but this black and white print is going to be so versatile this season I just had to use it. All the linen tees there are super lightweight and ideal for travel. From there, I added LOFT shorts and a fun ivory necklace. The shorts have a 6″ inseam. I think this length is very flattering for many heights. I’m a little scared to go much shorter!

Now let’s take a minute to talk shoes. I shopped at the TJMaxx on 57th a few weeks ago and spotted this Kate Spade wedges. They were a deal at $79. And I know I’ll be walking all over NYC in them this spring. Now I just need the weather to hit 70 and you’ll see me strutting all over town in this easy, chic look that is so easy to style.

Short Inspiration for Warmer Weather

How to wear shors

Embrace your legs. Ready or not it’s time to bear your skin. It’s shorts season. Here’s a way to put together a look that won’t be too young and cheeky. The buttoned-up chambray top makes this a more conservative pick. Add in some bright yellow and it’s anything but boring.
