Ralph Lauren Children’s Fashion Show

Ralph Lauren Children’s Fashion Show

Mermaids, sea lions, glitter tattoos and fashion–the Polo Ralph Lauren Fall 2015 Children’s Fashion Show was a highlight of our summer.

Fashion Show Seats

For years we’ve been invited to the Ralph Lauren Children’s show (in the Hamptons, and at the NY Public Library) and we’ve made a huge effort to attend. The girls love the spectacle and the RL team really knows how to throw a party. I met up with Vera Sweeney of Ladyandtheblog.com our kids all know each other–they got the front row treatment.

blogging families

The show kicked off with the dashing Levi Miller, star of Warner Brothers’ upcoming feature film Pan (releases Oct. 9). The cute young star made his runway debut–he looked great in his fall Ralph Lauren look complete with pirate cap.  He’s the brand’s new childrenswear ambassador and I bet is about to become a huge star.

As I said, the girls sat in the front row. I was right behind them seated across from Rachel Zoe–she was adorable as she got all moony-eyed when her son Skyler worked the runway. Rachel was wearing a dreamy cream tunic. As for me, I had a floral Ralph Lauren dress on that we featured here for Monday Mingle.

My girls didn’t do much celebrity watching. They just had a great time soaking in the fashions and then the candy!

RL pirate ship

All the children in attendance were wearing RL finery. My older daughter had Polo Maxi Dress on the and my younger one wore the Chiffon Floral Skirt. It was exciting that both pieces also came down the runway. It was so great to see Ralph come out for applause at the end. He looks fabulous!

They were even pictured in the NY Times recap from the event. Can you pick them out?

This year’s theme was Peter Pan and they themed the evening “A Night in Neverland.” The Central Park Zoo was turned into Neverland complete with pirate ship, mermaids and magic. After the runway, the kids headed over to the zoo’s sea lion area for nibbles and a bit of fanciness.

Highlights from the collection included, the vests and the great pops of color and all the vintage-inspired patches. Ralph and his team know that kids like to experiment AND that parents want clothes that are timelessly cool.

Here were some favorite looks from the event. Click over to Ralph Lauren site to see the full show and shop the collection 10% of the proceeds will benefit Reach Out and Read.

Once again the team at RL crafted the event in support of literacy–they always have a charity partner. I love that they pair fashion with a cause–especially when kids are involved. In the past year the Ralph Lauren Children’s Literacy program donated over 100,000 Scholastic books to Reach Out and Read.

Our “believe” tattoos might have worn off, but the memories will last forever. I for one, don’t want them to grow up too fast. I hope there was some pixie dust sprinkled on them at the event that will slow down the speed at which they are growing up.

Nautical Inspired: Summer Stripes

If there is one enduring summer trend that I love, it’s stripes. And I’m talking about nautical inspired stripes in particular. There is something so fun and summer about navy and white stripes. Plus, they’re incredibly versatile. Just like a nice leopard print, I use navy and white stripes almost as a neutral. So many colors play well with them! And I’m all about multi-purpose pieces. What mama isn’t? Kids grow out of clothes so fast, it’s important to have an interchangeable wardrobe…Am I right?

You can rock nautical stripes with metallics, which is what I usually turn to, and they look just fabulous with uber brights like neon as well. And there is always the classic red, white and blue combo. It doesn’t get much more Americana than that! Navy and white stripes even look fabulous with colors like yellow, coral and green…I could go on and on. So, now that you’ve seen why nautical stripes are one of my major summer style crushes, I thought I would share some of my favorite navy and white stripe pieces for kids.

Whether you’re shopping for your little dude or your little lady, I’ve got you covered. From tees, to shorts and even dresses, there are a plethora of ways your kiddos can rock nautical stripes this summer! And if you really want to get crazy, you can use them to try out some print mixing. I’ve always loved a nice plaid and stripes or polka dots and stripes pairing…Just sayin’! You could also mix smaller scale stripes with larger scale stripes like I did with my lil’ lady bean’s Burt’s Bees Baby look. She looks darling next to her big bro in his striped tee and bleach bottom shorts!

So, are nautical stripes one of our summer wardrobe must haves too lovelies? Come to think of it…I do believe I need to update my own stripes collection. A nice navy and white striped dress would look darling with one of the pairs of jelly sandals that I posted yesterday no?

Sibling Easter Style

My mom often dressed my sister and I in coordinating outfits for special occasions when we were growing up and definitely always for Easter. Even if we didn’t have matching dresses, our outfits complemented each other’s. I’ve loved continued on that tradition with my own kiddos. I have so much fun styling their coordinating looks each Easter and this year I have several options to choose from thanks to Ralph Lauren! The only question is, which pairing should I choose? Decisions, decisions…

seersucker

First up, we have a pink and white color scheme…My lil’ lady bean’s pink seersucker dress goes perfectly with her brother’s pink and white shirt and white Chino pants. I can’t get the hubs to wear pink for the life of me, so I’m thrilled that my lil’ dude is willing. Haha!

blueandwhite

Next, we went with blue and white…Both of my children have gorgeous light eyes. Blue and green to be exact, and blue outfits tend to really make their peepers shine! This time we highlighted my son’s blue Oxford shirt with a seersucker bow tie which went beautifully with his sister’s blue embroidered sash dress. And her Umi metallic sandals were the perfect finishing touch.

And finally, we have pure white…My baby’ girls’s white lace dress looks wonderful with my son’s white Oxford shirt,  seersucker jacket and shorts suit and madras bow tie. I love a nice stripes and plaid pairing. I added a touch of fun with contrasting Umi sneakers. A Southern gentleman can be classic and cool at the same time no?

So, which Easter outfits do you think these sweet siblings should wear on Easter Sunday? Mama needs help deciding!

Monday Mingle: Coming up With New Outfits

CAbi Fashions for Moms

Digging into the closet to come up with an outfit for today’s style session. And I’m lucky I got in this photo shoot before the great blizzard of ’15 that is headed to New York City. Since January is a time where we are all recovering from the holidays and few of us are shopping with gusto, I thought I’d show you and outfit that’s making the most of what I’ve got on hand.

get your boots shined

It started with the boots. These riding boots are from 2000. I got them when I was working at Ralph Lauren on Madison Avenue. I’ve had them resoled a few times, but the key thing is treating the leather. A few times a winter I head to my local shoe-care spot and have them cleaned and shined. And I have a kit at home too for quick buff-ups. I’d say they are looking pretty good 15 years later.

Monday Mingle Cabi

Then there’s the leggings. I’m a fan of the Lyssé legging. This pair has a faux leather front and are fitted with a hi-waist. To brighten up all the browns, I added a paisley top from CAbi Clothing and their coin necklace. CAbi is one of those brands that can be constantly reinvented. Mix seasons past with the latest finds and it all seems to work.

Favorite gloss

And finally, the last bit of brightening came from the CoverGirl lipgloss I picked up at CVS. I’m working on a Winter Beauty Series with them and look forward to sharing it. For now, you’ll see my new favorite hue–strawberry. Now you know what I’m up to before the snow. I can’t wait t see what’s happening in your closet.

Monday Mingle: Colorful DUMBO Brooklyn

DUMBO brooklyn street art

DUMBO, Brooklyn is such a fun place for a photo shoot. We have so much cool art out in our parks and on our walls. For the past few months I’ve been trying to share a little of the the spark of my community.

This week I’m under the Brooklyn Bridge by this cool stained glass house. It’s on a pier near my house and I love the color–especially when winter skies get gray. When I popped on this Ralph Lauren cable sweater in bright purple, I thought “yes, I know the perfect spot.” Josh, our amazing photographer (you can find out more about him JoshuaSterlingBragg.com) is always game for an outdoor shoot. Even when the temps dip.

ralph lauren cable sweater

For the outfit, I paired the RL sweater (which I scored at TJMaxx thank you very much!) with CAbi leggings (ladies I’ve been living in these–if you don’t have them call your CAbi consultant TODAY and order them).

old navy flower ring

The accessory deal of the day is this flower ring I found at Old Navy for $4.99. The price is right!

JOie booties

The booties are my favorites–from Joie and the perfect heel. I can walk everywhere in these. Ahhhh, the bag. That’s a gift from the folks at Stella McCartney from a long-ago campaign. Still looks good to me.

How are you keeping things colorful this winter? I hope you’ll share in Monday Mingle and all year long.

Holiday Fashions from Ralph Lauren

close-up three girls

We all love dress up. When it’s time to strike a post for cards or special photos, I’m luck to have girls who leap at the chance to go glam. Putting on holiday dresses takes absolutely no arm twisting, especially when it’s Ralph Lauren doing the designing.

If you haven’t been following along for the past eight years, you might not know that prior to launching Momtrends, I spend close to a decade working for Ralph Lauren. When I managed the store on Madison Avenue in NYC, I especially loved the holidays. No designer can touch Ralph when it comes to holiday dressing.

This year, I’m sharing a very special photo shoot. Again, if you haven’t been following along, you’ll know the girls don’t regularly appear on Momtrends. We try to keep their little world private, but when it comes to dressing up in Christmas finery, well, I just can’t resist.

Girls in RL

A word about the setting. You may wonder where cityfolk get Christmas trees. Well, in DUMBO Brooklyn we’ve got a sweet little stand in our neighborhood. It was the perfect place to model these pretty frocks.

RL dress in action

This red swing dress really moves beautifully and the color is so rich and gorgeous. The dress ended up being really popular and is now sold out but here’s the link to all the other Ralph Lauren Childrenswear Dresses at Bloomingdale’s I know you’ll find something great!

C plaid dress

The Ralph Lauren Childrenswear Girls’ Tartan Bib Dress IS still in stock. And for your tweens, it’s a delightful mix of uptown and downtown.

RL shoes

Fancy shoes are a must at the holidays. No you can’t pair sneakers with these pretty items. We paired the red dress with the plaid Allie Flat and the skull & crossbones Velour Jayde flat was a HUGE hit with my older daughter.

RL Lace Top Dress

Then there’s the grown-up section. I swooned over the Lauren Ralph Lauren Illusion Lace Dress. The top is so pretty and lacy and just the right amount of sheerness. The bottom flows out prettily and ties with a bow at the waist–a style that is universally flattering and nips in any waist.

RL Headshot

The dress made it’s party debut this weekend. The reviews are in and they’re great! Oh, and for the sparkle, it’s Stella & Dot (Casablanca bracelet and Casablanca earrings).

Labor Day Style

summer fashion staples

I’m predicting that many of you are busy enjoying this holiday with family and friends, but I still wanted to be sure that Monday Mingle was there for you! Since it’s a time for family and picnics, that’s what I am sharing. My 9 year old photographer snapped these images before we headed out to our party yesterday.

Not much new to report. These are all summer staples. The sunny Birkenstocks, the cut-offs, the air-dry hair. This has been my summer style.

birkenstocks

The shorts are Citizen of Humanity and I think I have worn them 90+ times this summer. Same for the Birks. The crochet sweater is OLD and from Lauren by Ralph Lauren.

tjmaxx necklace

The one new piece is the necklace. It’s a score from TJMaxx. $5 for this $110 necklace from Llydell NYC.

I hope you are wearing something sunny and fun on this last summer hurrah. Lots of great fashion coverage for fall is underway, but for now, I’ll embrace the summer staples.

How to Style Metallics

metallic poncho, how to style metallics

I love wearing gold in the summer. Could be because I have olive skin. Could be because I like a little sparkle. Could be because it is just a swell way to welcome the warm weather. When I purchase this gold poncho to wear to the Ralph Lauren girls fashion show in NYC (read all about that here RL Children’s Runway Show ) I knew I’d be wearing this top again and again. In fact, I brought it on a recent vacation to Nice!

But I digress. I meant to tell you how to style metallics. And really it’s so easy in summer.

RL metallic ponchoHere’s the rule: use white as your base color. Add gold accessories (pile ’em on!) and you’re done!

gold bangles stacked
A minute on the mani. I got sneak peak at the newest gel product from Sally Hansen. The new miracle gel polish will last like a gel that you have to bake on the the special lights. This one is quick to dry (perfect for summer) and leaves a great shine. My manicure lasted 10 days and looked fabulous. I’m wearing “Games of Chromes” available later this summer.

sally hansen gel manicure
A little NYC love! I got some loaner lenses from Moscot a local brand that’s all about quality. I’m wearing the STATEN from the MOSCOT Sun Collection ($295), Moscot has NYC locations (the closest one to me is on 159 Court Street
in Brooklyn; Between Dean & Pacific)and glasses are also available online.

2014 Children’s Runway Show & Matilda the Musical

Ralph Lauren Fashion show

Ralph Lauren presented the 2014 Children’s Runway Show at the iconic NY Public Library last night. The event was hosted by Uma Thurman in support of literacy at the at the New York Public Library. The girls and I got decked in head to toe Ralph Laurent to check out the fashions.

Ralph Lauren Fall 14 Children's Fashion Show In Support Of Literacy

Our review? A big thumbs up. The girls wanted everything. One veered towards the more princessy gowns and the other loved the layered looks–patchwork dresses with tweedy blazers. Check out the video:

Alicia Keys’ son Egypt made his modeling debut in the runway show, he and the puppies were the cutest. And Ralph himself cam out for the grand finale. This fashion event is one of the few things I take the girls too and the rare occasion when I let them get photographed. The brand is so interwoven in my life, I just can’t resist. There would be no Momtrends without Ralph Lauren!

Another reason to take the girls? The celebrities. They loved seeing Madison Beers and of course the Matildas. This year the charity partner was a literacy program. Guests enjoyed an exclusive performance by the cast of Matilda the Musical and helped Ralph Lauren kick off a literacy program committed to boosting literacy for children in need by providing access to books. Our goody bag was filled with reading goodness-The Book Thief on audio, and Roald Dahl’s Matilda.
