Ick. That’s what I think of when it comes to air travel. When it comes to staying healthy during business travel, I’ve got a few tips up my sleeve.
This fall I will be traveling a ton on my book tour for Mom Boss: Balancing Entrepreneurship, Kids & Success. The book is a roadmap meant to empower mom entrepreneurs to build meaningful careers while being deeply engaged with the kiddos.
To spread the word far and wide, I’m traveling to 20 cities between now and Christmas. My last stop brought me to Chicago for an event at American Girl and another at the Glenview Bookmarket–and that’s just the start! There will be a lot of hotels and airplanes in my life. But I’ve got a plan to make sure I stay as strong and healthy as possible.

1. Keep it clean: wipe down surfaces on planes including tray tables and armrests.
2. Cut out sugar: studies are linking sugar to all sorts of illnesses. I get a sugar hangover when I indulge in a big dessert or tempting cupcake.
3. Rest up: I shoot for 7 hours when I travel. If I have to take a red-eye, I build in nap time.
4. Hydrate: water is the beverage of choice, but I also drink loads of herbal tea. Since tea sachets are light and small, I pack my own camomile. After a cup or two at bedtime I’m ready to catch some zzz’s and I’m well hydrated.
5. Hit the gym: Even if it’s a ten minute strength and stretch session at the hotel gym, I do my best to get a sweat on.
Let’s talk about keeping healthy when you have to fly a lot. I’m a DELTA frequent flier (platinum) and while I love traveling, I hate getting sick.

When it comes to my diet, I drink water like an Olympic marathoner. Yes, it requires more bathroom breaks, but it also means my system is running clean. The Mayo clinic recommends 8, 8oz glasses a day, I go for double that when I travel. I count my chamomile tea as part of this–since there is no caffeine it in. To cut down on sugars, skip the morning juice and donut and power up with oatmeal and nuts instead. Almost every hotel has oatmeal on the menu. Eggs and greens are an ever healthier option if you can find them. I’ll save the splurges for when I’m home.
While it might be tempting to start binge watching a movie (I don’t know why I always get drawn into hotel movies, I mean how many times do I need to see Notting Hill?), click off the TV and go to sleep already.
Finally to get your heart pumping, get outdoors. That fresh air will do wonders. If hotel gyms aren’t your thing, don’t fret. Go for a walk or run. Runkeeper has some running routes around the globe for you
As for me, I always ask friends for routes. This was my view the last time I was in Chicago for business travel. Pretty awesome way to get the cobwebs out.
