Create a Cozy Guest Room

Do you have a guest room that’s neglected? I admit it, we need some guest room TLC and I wanted to create a cozy guest room. It’s a work in progress, but here’s where we are on the project.

As a busy working mom, I admit to many failings. One is that I like to think big when it comes to entertaining. I tap into my inner Martha Stewart in my brain—but execution, oh, that’s another thing.

For the past 6 years our guest room was pineapple yellow (a great color for pineapples, but not walls) and neglected. I vowed to change things.

We often host friends and family in our home. I love to cook and entertain, but I’ve overlooked the guest room experience. Bit by bit we’ve been upgrading our guest room. We started with some cool lamps from West Elm and then added a pair of mid-century modern night tables (also West Elm).

Then it was time to upgrade the sheets. Recently at our We Work offices in Brooklyn, I ran into the founders of Brooklinen. I was struck by the packaging and the clever name. I arranged a meeting to find out more. They couple that founded the company was looking for luxe linens to replicate the hotel experience, but they didn’t want to pay exorbitant pricing (apparently, department stores mark up the prices on linens by 80%!)

When they couldn’t find the quality of what they wanted at the price they wanted, the founders went into start-up mode. Now they have Brooklinen; a company they manufactures gorgeous high-quality lines without the department store markups

I upgraded our guest room with the white “original Brooklinen sheet set” made from long-staple Egyptian cotton. It’s a perfect cotton percale sheet. The set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and 2 pillowcases. For $109 it’s over-the-top luxurious.

Get your own set of Brookinen sheets here. It was part of an overall re-do. We added a fresh coat of paint, some new night stand and lamps and we’re on our way. Now when guests pop over, they get a stay that’s a little more relaxing.

Better Guest Room

Create a Cozy Guest Room:

1. Have at least 1-2 free drawers for your guests.
2. Leave 4-5 nice hangers available in the closet.
3. Clean sheets and towels are a must
4. Leave a little light reading, a carafe of water and fresh flowers by the bedside
5. Don’t forget the nightlight. Guests won’t intuitively know the way to the bathroom

I still have a bunch of items to finish, but I’m on the way. Next we are getting window treatments up (I found the cutest fabric on Minted.com) and art. I’m probably going to use Minted for the artwork too.

A few more nice things to tuck into a guest room:
1. Slippers for winter and flip-flops for summer
2. I love this printable for wifi information. I’m going to make one of these and frame it for our guests. I love this free printable template from Pinterest. (Source: Today’s Creative Life)
3. Keep a little basket of emergency items like Advil, Bandaids and general toiletry products. I save up items like these luxe toiletries I scored at Canyon Ranch.
4. Local maps and a folder of things to do in the area.
