Healthy Snacks and Breakfast Options for Back-to-School

Food Guide, healthy food, food for kids

With our kids’ going to back-to-school soon (or maybe they are already back!), we want to make sure that there day starts off on a healthy foot as well as that they have snacks to get them through the day. We have uncovered some of our favorite new products for this time of year that we are sure will be an instant favorite in your home:

Breakfast:

Since mornings are often rushed, we love serving Thomas’ Mini Bagels for the kids and Bagel Thins for a quick and healthy breakfast option. Personally, I love to spread on Almond Butter on the Mini Bagels and serve them with some fruit to start my girls off right. Another option with Thomas’ Mini Bagels is to make a protein-rich breakfast with Gouda, Ham and Apple Bagel Thins. All you have to do is toast 1 Thomas’ 100% Whole Wheat Bagel Thins bagel. Place 3 to 4 slices of ham and 1 slice of smoked Gouda onto one half of the Bagel Thins bagel and place under broiler until cheese is melted. Top with 2 to 3 slices of apple and other Bagel Thins slice. (263 calories, 6g dietary fiber, 16g protein). Thomas’ Bagel Thins are available in 100% Whole Wheat, Cinnamon Raisin, Everything and Plain, and can be purchased at supermarkets and mass stores (like Walmart and Target) nationwide, with an SRP of $3.99. For more information, visit www.thomasbagelthins.com.

Another way to enhance any breakfast experience is to enhance your morning meal (or really any meal) with Carrington Farm’s Flax Chia Blend and Flax Hemp blend. I love adding this chia and flax hemp blend to smoothies, cereal, on top of toast or English Muffins and to oatmeal. Loaded with Omega 3’s, fiber, antioxidants, and minerals, this blend is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and boost metabolism. We use this blend all the time and the kids love its delicious and subtle, yet nutty flavor.

We also love granola, and during BlogHer we had the chance to learn more about the Nature Valley granola line that contains 10 grams of protein and at least 23 grams of whole grain (48 grams of whole grain recommended daily); it’s available in two varieties – Oats ‘n Dark Chocolate and Oats ‘n Honey. They also shared a delicious recipe for French toast (see below) that gets an extra dose of crunch when coated with granola.

Crunchy Granola French Toast  Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Start to Finish: 35 Minutes
4 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups Nature Valley® oats ‘n honey protein granola
3 to 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
8 slices whole wheat bread
1 cup real maple or maple-flavored syrup

Directions:

1. In large bowl, beat eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla with whisk until well combined.

2. In food processor, place granola. Cover; process about 30 seconds or until all large pieces are broken up and coarse meal forms. Transfer to shallow bowl.

3. In 10-inch nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium-low heat. Dip bread slices into egg mixture then into granola to coat evenly on both sides. Place 2 slices in skillet; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until deep golden brown. Turn; cook 2 to 3 minutes longer. Repeat with remaining bread slices, adding oil as needed.

4. Serve each slice with 2 tablespoons syrup.

Serve with your favorite fruit, such as blueberries or strawberries.

Snacks:

We love Fruit Bliss and their selection of all-natural, unsulfured fruit that is just as sweet and juicy as fresh fruit. Made using high-quality whole fruit sourced from Turkey, France and Tunisia, Fruit Bliss’ sun-sweetened whole apricots, plums, dates and figs are infused with moisture to deliver a deliciously juicy fruit every time. Right now we are also the line from MySuperSnack featuring tasty (soft) Granola Bite. As a portable, chewy granola bite, snack for kids 2-12., MySuperSnack (soft) Granola Bites are offered in three delicious flavors: apple raisin, banana blueberry acai, and chocolate. My girls and I love these sweet and healthy treats that we enjoy while-on-the-go. Personally, I love that the packaging is super convenient and resealable – making them idea for school, travel or whatever adventures you and your kids embark on.

Another way for kids to get their nutrients is through what they drink. One of our favorite new products is an all natural, gluten-free and sugar-free vitamin line for kids called VoloVitamins. As a line with no sugar, VoloVitamins offers families the convenience of providing their kids with vitamins while on-the-go. This includes a blend of 17 different fruits that is packed with minerals vitamins such as Vitamin A, Boron, Iron, Copper, Calcium and much more that all designed to support the growth, development and natural defenses for child’s growing body and mind.

Another drink we are really excited about is Sneaky Pete, a tasty and fiber-rich beverage with only 40 calories. Kids will love the delicious varieties with flavors like Apple, Mango, Raspberry, Peach, Grape that pack 3 grams of fiber (equal to eating a bowl of oatmeal!) – making it perfect for digestive health, heart health and even as a beverage as a part of a weight management system. Personally, I love carrying these with me as an alternative to water where I know my kids and I are getting hydrated as well as boosting our fiber intake.
