Syncing Your Style: Back-to-School Fashion for Moms

Heading back to school isn’t just for kids!  Last month we talked all things belts, and this time Syncing Your Style is all about what real moms (ie THIS mom) will be wearing as we head back-to-school.

The new school has begun for just about everybody and this year marked yet another monumental moment in our family. This year, both B’s will be in school (sniff) and I’ll be dealing with early empty nest syndrome. Getting all three of us out of the house can be a bit chaotic if I am not organized and prepared. I have tried to just run out the door in my yoga pants but not only do I not look good (as I am never actually heading to a yoga class!), I don’t feel good about myself either. I don’t want to spend all the time in the world getting ready, nor am I planning on wearing high heels to preschool drop off (admittedly, I tried this…it doesn’t work!) So, what’s a mama to do? Well, I scoured my closet, peaked at a few fashion blogs and put together a few go-to looks that would leave me feeling presentable without too much effort.

Below you’ll find a few looks that I have worn to preschool drop-off. I felt dressed enough to feel confident, comfortable to easily pick up the kids, run errands and attend appointments without feeling too fussy or over-dressed.

Above I am wearing an old stand-by, a bib floral dress by Free People, simple capri leggings, (making it easy to move) comfy flats from Patagonia (they play up the pink from my dress), my favorite turquoise hoops, and my most used belt from the LOFT…an easy but put-together look.

I rely on leggings and dresses, colored jeans, and even the new rage, colored chinos paired with a favorite chambray button up. Simple jewelry, whether it be a necklace or a pair of hoops, fun shoes (even rocked my cowgirl boots!) and I am out the door, ready to start my day. I use hats, scarves, and belts (click here to see the Lands’ End one I am wearing above) to change up my look or to disguise bad hair, or a wrinkly shirt.

The psuedo wrap dress (Lands’ End) is easy to wear, is an instant outfit and is super comfy! I added my own belt to personalize the look and played up the yellow in the flowers by adding a fun little bag. Classic stripes paired with white jeans, colored flats and a thick multi- chain necklace is a simple way to feel polished when you only have minutes to spare. Try pairing fun colored jeans, bright flats, with a neutral flowy shirt for another easy to move in but stylish look.

I played down a dressy lace tank dress by putting a cropped denim shirt over it and let the little details like studded shoes turn an ordinary outfit into something that represents me. It takes almost as much time to throw on one of these looks as it would to pull on yoga pants and a hoodie, but this way I feel like my day has started too and I have a more confident attitude allowing me to tackle my day and be more productive.

Disclaimer: I know I look a bit awkward in the photos, I am not a model, just a real mom scooting about town asking random people to take my photograph! The backgrounds may not be pretty and the hair is not perfect, but I wanted to share what I actually looked like as I’m on my way to taking my kids back to school. I hope you have a great school year and are insprired to take a minute for yourself as you’re pleading for your kids to put their shoes on (for the tenth time!).

I defintely stuggle with the preschool drop off. I am more worried about getting my daughter dressed, breakfast and teeth brushed than myself. But when I look extra shlumpy I don’t want to get out of the car!

“shlumpy” i love that word, it is hard when we feel like we have to hide…we need to bring our kids into the building so there’s no where to hide for me!

Love your looks! I always feel better in nice jeans and a blazer with flats or a dress for preschool pickup!

    • Michelle

Thank you! I have just started wearing my blazer with skinny jeans and ballet flats…another fave look!

LOL, you look AWESOME. Don’t give me the “not a model”, you should be one! I’ll admit, I’m not the most stylish mom. I play it safe when it comes to clothes. It doesn’t help that I only shop for myself once or twice a year, and even then I try to get in and out of the stores as fast as possible. :)
I tell my sis this same thing, but I just need to hire someone like you to shop for me. LOL

    • Michelle

I love shopping…for other people! I don’t LOVE to shop either, I do keep my basics in there and usually spring for a few newer things to update my look. (I always give consignment a try too!) thanks for your support!
