Investing in Fashion

Don’t you love a good party? I dressed up last week to attend a symphony benefit in NYC. I trotted out my favorite pair of Manolos (purchased 5 years ago at 75% off) and a classic Ralph Lauren dress.

I shot these photos on my roof as the sun was on the way down over the East River. Then we had to hit the streets to get some better light for my shoes to show up. The cream colored Vespa was a bonus–found on the streets of Brooklyn.

I’m showing off my latest bag–the Newbury from Lauren (it’s $298 on zappos). Which fits so well with my lady-like theme. I adore the pebbly leather and the golden taupe color.

Not much is new in this outfit–the bag was making a debut, everything else has been styled and shown off before. You’ve likely seen me in this Stella & Dot Sofia Pearl Bib Necklace ($118)–but I can’t help myself with adding it to outfits. But isn’t that the beauty of a wardrobe? It has the ability to seem fresh and inspired as the years go by.

I do love my labels, but I’m not a slave to them. It is worth noting, the items I spend a bundle on TEND to stand the test of time. That’s not to say I don’t love a well-priced trendy piece.

I’ll stand by my classics and spend a little more on timeless pieces that won’t bore me at the end of a season. How about you? Do you shop only trends or do you make investments?

I agree. Invest in quality and you can’t go wrong!

  • http://glamamom.com Glamamom

GORG! I love everything about your look and am totally with you about investing in solid pieces. My issue is fluctuating weight. I always get rid of stuff I don’t wear even if it is an investment piece. Maybe when I’m done having babies it will get easier.

You can never go wrong investing in shoes. Bergdorf sale starts soon!

I expect my clothes to stand the test of time and only shop trends if I can tell that they are going to be very flattering. Great outfit!

You look beautiful! Oh how I miss the shoe sales of the recession…. I snagged a few pairs of Louboutins for around $300 each in 2007. Le sighhhh.

    • http://momtrends.com Nicole

That’s when i bought these. I’m with you. Glad the economy is crawling back and all…but those sales!

    • http://momtrends.com Nicole

Thanks Mary. I find that stocking my closet with staples and filling in with trends works for me.

I do love the necklace, and this dress is fab! I see that Vespa all the time, haha.

    • http://momtrends.com Nicole

I almost hopped on but I thought I saw the owner nearby!

The monochromatic color scheme is lovely and suits your coloring. I think every piece you are wearing will stand the test of time. You should of hoped on the vespa how fun would that photo be.

You look wonderful! Your whole outfit is amazing, right down to the shoes. I love fashion that lasts, and and try to make sure classic pieces make up about 75% of my wardrobe. It’s fun using them in new ways each new season. That said, I’m not at all adverse to popping a few trendy pieces in to freshen things up from time to time :)

  • http://www.torontoshopoholic.com Jane

Looks great, very timeless outfit. I tend to find that even if a higher end item plays with a trend it does it in a way that doesn’t look cheesy years later.

  • http://Www.blushmamas.com Jodi @ Blush Mamas

You look amazing! I agree, I spend on the well made pieces and save on trendier items. And it’s fun to mix and match!

  • http://www.bumptobabygear.com/ Whitney

Love the Manolos, I will never forget when I snagged a pair several years ago for 80% off. Something to be said for timeless pieces, expensive, but they don’t fall in or out of fashion like so many other things.

    • http://www.momtrends.com/ Nicole Feliciano

      Ah, 80% good times!

  • http://www.everythingfitabulous.com Melissa

    Nicole,
Great outfit! Anything i spend a good amount of money on, must stand the test of time. I love investing in classics, but I also love shopping at stores like Forever 21, express, and Target for trendy pieces that I don’t mind tossing after a season or 2!

  • http://Www.everythingsabuzz.com Michelle

I mix, match, go for classic, timeless and a little bit trendy all while keeping my love for ladylike looks! My mom bought me my first prada shoes when I officially moved out! I love them and haven worn them a zillion times over….

    • http://Www.everythingsabuzz.com Michelle

You look wonderful! Love the different textures!

      • http://www.momtrends.com/ Nicole Feliciano

Thanks! Texture is a great thing to experiment with when you’ve got a monochromatic look.

  • http://parentingbydummies.com dumb mom

You look amazing. And I totally agree with making fashion investments in timeless pieces. My mom has boots from the 80s that have never rally gone out of style. She just keeps getting them resoled and she looks fab every time she wears them. I also notice that, if I buy a better quality piece, it tends to look better on my body. Gone are the days of the $12 dress at 5-7-9. Especially since I can’t wear a single digit, odd sized anything these days!

  • http://www.thecentsiblelife.com Kelly {the Centsible Life}

Love this look on you! It’s just perfection. I agree on investing in good pieces, sadly I had a fave pair of Kate Spade heels that someone nabbed at a conference last year. :(

    • http://momtrends.com Nicole

      What! That is despicable.

  • http://www.bonbonrosegirls.com Kristin

What a statement piece that necklace is!
