I love the idea of giving gifts, but I had buying wrapping paper only to have it make its way to the trash seconds after the thrill of opening the gift is over. In fact, over five million tons of waste is generated during the gift-giving season. With some summer parties in full swing, I have been focusing on wasting less by using an innovative and unique resuable fabric Gift Box called Gift It Green (gig).
Created by Kim Blanding, a mom of three, who had “four huge black trash bags filled with paper wrap, paper gift bags, and boxes” from her son’s first Christmas. She couldn’t locate anything that was reusable and fun to unwrap, so she developed Gift it Green, a company that captures the thrill of opening a gift while also being conscious of the impact of waste on the environment.
How it works is simple. Place the gift in the middle of the box and then cover it in eco-chic crinkly tissue paper, which captures the thrilling experience of unwrapping a gift. This means that you never need any scissors, tape, or fancy bows. The boxes -available in small and large – speak for themselves thanks to their gorgeous designs like cupcake bliss, it’s a hoot, wildflowers and green Christmas.
Not only a resulable gift wrapping option, I love that the company focuses on a ‘gift it forward’ concept where the receiver of item writes their name or city name on an enclosed tag as they pass it on to the next person. This way there is not only no waste but the product continues to get use- with the potential to travel the U.S and beyond.
Additionally, Gift It Green is a Green America Bronze Certified Business that supports organizations that teach kids about the environment, such as Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Now, that is a way to give back and pay it forward in style.
