Book Review – Portion Size Me: A Kid-Driven Plan to a Healthier Family

Portion Size Me: A Kid-Driven Plan to a Healthier Family is a fantastic book for any family looking to learn more about eating more nutritiously both in terms of portion size, and ingredients. Feeding a family can be an arduous task. Shopping, preparing, cooking and serving meals takes a good amount of time and can be overwhelming and exhausting.

Portion-Size Me is a great read to help any family tackle the both sides of meals in a helpful, positive and effective way. While my two children are a bit little to read, we do speak about serving size, whole foods, natural ingredients, and making healthy food choices. I can only imagine that as they grow older and lend a hand in shopping and preparing meals, that the meal related tasks will not seem like chores, but opportunities to enjoy time together as a family.

Portion Size Me is all about getting educated, making healthy foods choices for the whole family and eating to nourish your body and provide it with the energy it needs to accomplish all of your daily goals.

Here are some highlights from the book:

  • Eat as many real food as possible-think whole, fresh, organic.
  • Read ingredients-does the box or package have many unfamiliar ingredients? and what are the ingredients?
  • Pause before your first bite.
  • Get moving-be active.
  • Family time should include everyone helping out in the kitchen.
  • Be mindful of portion sizes.

Portion Size Me was co -author, Marshall Reid’s idea as he wanted to create the opposite effect as the much publicized Super Size Me. Marshall was overweight, getting picked on by friends and had a very low energy level. With his mom, Alex, they have created an informative, inspiring and realistic guide to eating healthier, more nutritious meals. The book is full of recipes, tips, anecdotes, and inspiring true stories. Visit the Reid’s site, http://portionsize.me/ for an ongoing look at Marshall and his family’s  journey, updated articles and new recipes.

Following Portion Size Me hails many benefits such as losing weight and/or maintaining a healthy weight, increasing your energy level and creating a positive more healthy attitude about food and eating, and most of all spending quality time with your family, growing, learning and nourishing one another’s souls.

You can purchase Portion Size Me, for $ 17 at both major retailers and online at sources such as Amazon.

This sounds really interesting. I have 3 boys (very young- 3 years and 19 mo twins) and am becoming more and more conscious of what they eat. I might give this book a try just for planning down the road- starting good habits now (for all of us) takes ME time. Thanks for the post.

It is such a great idea to try to ease your way into better habits. I def. stick more to changes when I do them gradually and incorporate them into my daily routine. The book has so much to offer, and I liked that I could use part of it, and still reap the benefit!
