New Cedar Creek Homestead from Old Favorite Lincoln Logs

Raise your hand if you knew that Lincoln Logs were developed in 1916 by the son of famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright? My hand remains by my side. I didn’€™t know the cultural significance of these all-American toys. I just knew they were amazing building “blocks” that I played with with my dad for countless hours. We would create a small village, with barns and cabins of all sizes. I might have made a shoe store once, but my dad didn’€™t realize it. He probably thought it was just another cabin.

The set we used as his original Lincoln Logs that he played with my grandfather and uncle when he was a kid. Three generations, one set of Lincoln Logs. That’€™s staying power. Must be why Lincoln Logs was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.

We’€™re on our fourth generation now. That set is in my daughter’€™s closet as we speak. I’€™m looking forward to building our own log cabin homes. And now I can add onto the set with the company’s recently launched Cedar Creek Homestead. This newest adventure has 43 pieces in all and step-by-step building instructions. Kids can build this farmer’€™s homestead with real 100 percent wood logs, something I was happy to see since the plastic knock-offs make me sad.

And unlike the boring ones of old, it even comes with a cute little farmer, dog, doghouse, bale of hay and barrel. I wonder if the farmer ever finds himself in the doghouse. There’€™s no Mrs. Farmer, so I’€™m guessing no. There’s an open-and-close door that easily works into the house configuration, and since the roof is plastic (not cardboard like our old set), it’ll be around for years (and in better shape than ours is).

This is a great way to begin a tradition with your child, building homes and creating the stories within them. And, if you build a shoe store, I bet a Mrs. Farmer might even show up.
