Friday Food News: Stretch Island Fruit Co.’s Fruit Tree 101

As this year marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day, Stretch Island Fruit Co., makers of all-natural fruit snacks, is challenging Americans to celebrate by making small changes within their communities through the ‘€˜Fruit Tree 101′€™ program.

Stretch Island Fruit Co. established ‘€˜Fruit Tree 101′€™ alongside the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation in 2007, to address important issues like sustainability, caring for the environment and proper nutrition. To date, the program, which donates fruit tree orchards to schools nationwide, has planted more than 2,500 fruit trees and shrubs, resulting in approximately 450,000 pounds of oxygen and the ability to offset nearly 563,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Here are a few ways you can get involved this Earth Day:

  • Submit your child’€™s school, or a local school in your community, to receive a schoolyard planting and educational experience.
  • Sign up to become a volunteer with the ‘€˜Fruit Tree 101′€™ program by visiting http://www.ftpf.org/volunteer.htm
  • Plant a fruit tree in your own yard! The foundation’€™s tree planting instructions make it easy to successfully grow your own fruit.
  • Consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation so the ‘€˜Fruit Tree 101′€™ program can continue to successfully grow for years to come.

How are you celebrating Earth Day? We’d love to hear your great ideas too.
