Organizational Ideas for Sharing a Bedroom

When siblings share a bedroom, space can be an issue. How do you get the most use out of close quarters while still defining a separate area for each child?

For my family, the answer to this dilemma has been elfa. elfa shelving and organizational units are versatile and offer many options for accessibility, flexibility, and visibility. A top pick for me is the elfa Mesh Closet Drawers found at The Container Store.

I love these drawer units and they come in several heights – making them ideal to store a variety of items. If you don’t have room for a dresser, they also work great in a closet. My favorite part is the deeper drawers that can everything from clothes to toys.

When sharing a room, it is also great to have space for each child’s personal belongings. High shelves with a desk below allow for each child’s achievements to be displayed and they also give you more floor space for play. In addition to trophies and class photos, you can also stack games, collectibles and school books. The bottom shelf can also serve as a desk. I like how each child has a separate color to help sort personal effects. This look also clears up clutter and adds dimension to your wall.

In addition to great storage and organization, adding style to a shared bedroom helps to make it feel complete and at home.  When one of the siblings is a baby, it can be challenging to incorporate the feel of a nursery with an older sibling. I found the answer to my dilemma at Pottery Barn Kids. The Daisy Garden Quilted Bedding gave a whimsical look that was appropriate for all ages. The rug makes for a great play space and brings the room together.

Another Pottery Barn Kids favorite is the Cameron Cubby and Drawer Base.  The drawer allows you to hide anything from extra blankets, games or dolls and their clothing. The cubby section is great for baskets that allow you to keep your pieces together yet hide them for a more organized look.

These ideas for siblings sharing a room allow for organization and style. This makes for a happy mom and children.

Cute ideas! Love the desk and shelves. Would work for more than just sharing – even just a small room.

Yes, the shelves are also great for small rooms. These have really been space savers for me. The drawers fit many pairs of children’s jeans and sweaters.

I love how color plays a big factor is making the room look fun, organized and interesting.
