Holiday outfits don’t require an expensive trip to the mall. Adding a new top, pant or piece of jewelry can help turn a ho-hum look into a fashion statement. This week we had a bit of a fashion challenge working with LOFT. They gave us $150 to put together a New Year’s Eve look.
We headed to our local LOFT shop in Brooklyn Heights and found so much to work with. Since I didn’t want to just get a dress and be done, I set out to buy separate pieces that would enhance items already in my closet. First, I wanted a top that would work with everything from dressy jeans to a fitted black skirt. I scored with the Draped Ruffle V Shell Bold Teal ($49.50). Love the rich jewel-toned color and the modern neckline.
Next, I wanted a dressy pant that would work with my beaded tops as well as holiday sweaters. These trim Velvet Pants ($69.50) fit the bill perfectly. Finally I added this beaded belt ($39.50) similar to this ruched belt. The three pieces blend nicely with the rest of my closet and serve as a timely update.
Finally, I added this jeweled necklace (from last holiday) to the outfit for a little sparkle and a pair of Ralph Lauren heeled booties. Now, here’s my advice to getting party ready this holiday.
Comfort matters! When you will be heading to a party you want to exude style and grace. If your shoes are too tight or a top doesn’t fit perfectly you’ll feel “off” all night. Always give the outfit a trial run before a special night.
I’m really into statement necklaces. I like to add a little sparkle with a chunky piece. The one featured was from last year’s LOFT collection and it still looks great.
Here’s a go-to outfit: Black pants and a bright or beaded top. Dresses are amazing–but they also don’t allow you to mix and match as much as separates. I have quite a few dress pants in black (velvet, tuxedo and leather) that I then pair with fancy tops. I like the funky, unexpected look of separates.
Add a touch of sparkle–either chandelier earrings, a sequin scarf or a chunky necklace AND a great new red lipstick!
