American Express Savvy Online Shopper Tips

Enter to Win $250 in Gift Cards and Merchandise.

Shopping regret is such a bummer. The rewards of online shopping are huge–the availability, the shipping to your door, and the endless variety of merchandise that is available online. But even this savvy mom makes mistakes and can learn to shop smarter. I’ve been burned a few times on the short-sale sites. You know, the ones that offer huge discounts of 30-75% off of merchandise. Well a recent purchase went sour. I ordered a portable DVD player for our upcoming trip to Florida. I wanted something to keep the kiddos entertained in flight.

After a friend recommended a “deal site” I took a leap of faith and clicked on a portable DVD player at 61% off. I checked the shipping dates–and the window worked for me. But one week before the trip no DVD player and a call from the site telling me the sale had oversold and I wouldn’t be getting the DVD.

TIP: Deal sites are not for everyday purchases. Don’t count on fast delivery or guarantees. If you truly need something on time order from a site with a reputation for quick shipping (hello Zappos!).

Here are some additional savvy shopping tips for you as we get ready to kick off the holiday shopping season.

1.) Keep a copy of all your credit cards in a safe spot. If they are ever lost of stolen you’ll have the numbers at your fingertips to cancel cards.

2.) Create a tough password. CNN posted an article about creating secure passwords, and here’s an example…”F&WL2HH&E4D.” This stands for “Fred And Wilma Like To Have Ham And Eggs For Dinner”

3.) Check the return policies on all purchases. Many flash sales or special discount codes nullify the return and you might be stuck. That being said, always check retailmenot.org for coupon codes before you process your order.

4.) Keep an email file of all your shopping so you can easily track orders and shipping.

5.) Mark your calendar. Free shipping Friday is December 16th this year and many online retailers will get your your goods in time for Christmas at no extra fees.

6.) Rack up the points by shopping with a card that delivers perks. I’ve been a member of American Express’s Membership Rewards program for more than a decade. The points I’ve earned have given me trips to glorious spots and unbelievable fashion finds.

Win it! We’re teaming up with American Express Membership Rewards to help you shop smarter. We’re giving away a grand prize of $250. Pick merchandise or gift cards through Membership Rewards or a combination of gift cards/merchandise. Prizes include:

Saks Fifth Avenue: (denominations: $50, $100, $250)

  • My biggest online shopping mistake would be buying from stores that do not have great return policies. I am an avid Nordstrom, Lilly Pulitzer and Zappos shopper because all of these have AMAZING customer service and return policies. I have learned my lesson!

  • Something similar happened to me when I wanted to buy a new digital camera before going on vacation a couple years ago. I went for the less expensive one, but they were oversold and couldn’t get it to me by the shipping date. I had to scramble at the last minute to find a camera, which I did, so the crisis was averted. But still, lessoned certainly learned.

My biggest shopping mistake was buying a pair of shoes that weren’t in my size, but were sold out everywhere, I wanted them so bad, I thought “I’ll *make* them fit” like Cinderella’s stepsisters trying to smoosh that darn glass slipper on. Well, turned out they didn’t fit, duh, and I finally had the shoes I wanted but couldn’t wear them. So, I ended up selling them on Ebay for less than I paid for them :/ Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

My biggest online shopping mistakes have to do with when I buy something that I don’t need because it is on sale or I think it is a good deal. Half the time, the next day, I didn’t even really want the item!

Online shopping can be so hard! Especially because you can’t see the product before hand! I am often especially tempted by the discount sites (gilt etc). Have picked up things that don’t end up fitting right (recently a winter coat) and often get stuck with them because of unfriendly return policies!

  • i bought a stroller that was listed as a floor sample but in great condition with minor scratches to the frame. it had no warranty however. well when it came the front swivel wheel was a mess! the bearings were blown out so it would not move freely but hung up all the time making steering impossible. Since the stroller had more than scratches wrong with it, as promised, I was going to try to contact the company I bought it from. Well they went out of business like the day after I bought it!!! I found a facebook page still up and operating and posted my problem on it and they said basically, oh well too bad for you!

I wanted to buy my daughter some sidewalk chalk to use at the park. I went online and found a set of Crayola “jumbo” sidewalk chalk that looked perfect. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive so that we could try it out. Well, lo and behold, when it showed up, it was indeed “jumbo” – it was nearly as tall as my then 2-year-old daughter!! I couldn’t fathom how anyone could possibly use something that big. So I had to go back online and find some “normal” size chalk and I donated the enormous chalk – not sure who ended up with it, but they’re probably quite tall!

My biggest online shopping mistake was making my purchase before checking for coupon codes.
