Win $750 in prizes geared to get your family reading!
Moms of style and substance know summer reading is always trendy. For moms, that might mean catching up on a thrilling biography or a juicy romcom while at the pool. We savor our free time with books. But what about our kids? When the final school bell rang, did you have a summer reading plan for your kids? Let’s talk about why reading is so important and help you make a plan.
Scary Factoid #1: Children ages 8–18 spend approximately 7.5 hours using entertainment media and only 25 minutes per day that children spend reading books. Summer is a great time to turn back the tide of media that is bombarding your kids. We’re encouraging moms to go “old-school” this summer with a membership to the Children’s Book of the Month Club.
Daunted by the task of getting your kids reading? Don’t be. This online book club makes it easy to pick books that are age-appropriate and popular for only $6.99 a book. Need more inspiration? Here’s Scary Factoid #2: Kids who don’t read year-round can be two years behind their peers by the end of sixth grade!
Picture this: Your child races to the mailbox to rip open the latest book and heads to his favorite reading spot. Encouraging Factoid: Out-of-school reading habits of students show that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year. Now that is truly a gift that keeps on giving. Grandparents, consider this the next time you reach for an expensive video game!

My favorite book as a child was “We Were Tired of Living in a House”. It’s out of print now, but I have a vintage copy. What a beautifully illustrated and imaginative book! There are so many others, too, but that one really sticks in my mind.
