Deposit a Gift.com is an online registry where moms-to-be can collect cash towards the items they really need for baby.  The service is free to set up and allows families to create virtual showers that result in far less wasted time and effort. Yes, it is taking all the pomp and circumstance out of showers, but we think this is a very real solution for busy families.

They’ve got a quick video here that explains the process in detail. But we’ll break it down:

Sign up for a free account and create a new registry with a personalized homepage.
Build a registry of all the items you’ll need for baby with a general price tag attached.
Email friends and family with a link to your site inviting them to gift your via Deposit A  Gift NOT a traditional registry.
Family and friends donate via credit card.
You “cash out” by getting a wire transfer (free–$35 for an international transfer), visa gift card (free) or check (free)

We like that the gift givers DO NOT have to open an account to contribute to a registry. They simply pay with Amex, Mastercard, Discover or Visa. Since the registry is free, we wondered how Deposit A Gift makes money. Here’s the answer: They charge a 7.5% fee on the gifts. Which doesn’t seem like a lot to me considering you get a well-organized website and a service that takes credit cards. Amex and Visa typically collects a small percentage (2-4%) on purchases. So if grandma really wants you to get maximum value she can send you a check, but we like the community aspect of the site–that is the added value.

This program is of course less personal than a traditional bridal shower with frilly wrapped gifts. But really what’s left of tradition? Many families are strewn across the globe and unable to gather for a shower. And what about the single working women on a tight budget who are having babies solo? They don’t have the time or energy to handle registry returns.
